They were warned. What more did they want? We all want smaller government, but it seems that some think the Gov't should have just gone in down there and hauled people out of their houses and onto busses prior to this storm making landfall.

Nope...unfortunately, this is "limited government" at its best. The Gov't warned....the people turned it down....bad stuff happened.

I don't see how anybody in the Gov't owes anything over and above the help they can render now that it's a true mess down there. The Governor has a mess on her hands though. That's for certain. She knew that most people in NOLA lived 7 feet below sea level and that the levees weren't up to snuff. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers told her that some time back.

I hate to disagree. But although the Gov't IS obligated to help, it is my very own personal opinion that they TRIED to help when they told people to EVACUATE.

I have a very large family in NO, St. Bernard Parish and surrounding areas. Everyone who was ever born or lived in NOLA knew this was their version of "The Big One" that Californians live with.

There are people who stay behind in hurricanes simply to take advantage - to loot form their vulnerable neighbors and businesses; some who stay to "party," some who are incapable of understanding the danger of Mother Nature at her worst.

It is hard to leave your home, but if you and your family are dead or at the mercy of these untamed war lords that we are now seeing, what good are your possessions?

NOTE: Evidently what occurred with some of the evacuation: bus drivers of mass transit and school buses were ordered to return and park them. Those buses should have been used to evacuate those who were unable to leave: tourists, the elderly and children. (There is a thread of photos from Katrina which shows the school buses) Who ordered the buses parked?
