In other words, he was telling him to say only what would help me, as I dealt with my crisis. Complaining about my performance would only help to get us both killed.

First, let me mention that I love your "rants" and insights. But, the story and lesson of landing your Tomcat needs to be shouted from the rooftops. Whiners and complainers do nothing but use up oxygen. If people don't like a situation, fine, but come up with a useful alternative instead of a complaint.
