NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- Police and National Guard troops struggled to restore order Thursday in New Orleans, where gunfire, looting and small fires have disrupted efforts to evacuate the flooded city.
Authorities started busing evacuees from the Louisiana Superdome Wednesday night but have suspended that operation because of deteriorating conditions there. The stadium has been the shelter for about 30,000 people who did not escape before Hurricane Katrina ripped through the city.
Lt. Col. Pete Schneider, of the Louisiana National Guard, said there were reports that several small trash fires were burning around the building and firefighters were having a hard time reaching the area. (Watch report on violence delaying evacuation) "It's a great concern. We've got to get them put out," he told CNN's Miles O'Brien in Baton Rouge. "Although they're small trash fires and may burn out, we don't want to take the chance of anything spreading."
He confirmed that a National Guardsman was shot and wounded on Wednesday and that there had been reports that a Chinook helicopter was shot at Thursday while trying to evacuate people. Schneider said that authorities also had to bus out crowds of people who converged on evacuation points to try to get out of the city.

How quickly the thin veneer of civilization to breaks down..
We're watching the cradle-to-grave cloak of liberalism shred itself to pieces in the calming breeze of reality
It really reminds me what a great work our police do. They are the thin blue line between civilization and chaos.
This is the result.
Yes, how relatively easy it is for anarchy and lawlessness to break out when there is mass confusion and mob mentalities. It grows like a cancer into a free for all and everybody gets whipped up into the emotion of it.
People panic and "top off" their gas tanks, distributers panic and take advantage of the emotion by price gouging. Im suspect calm and order will return in days.
Steve Harrigan of FNC is at a location in NO where a lot of private citizens with small boats are attempting to rescue some of the stranded folks. They have been stopped because some boats have been fired upon.
Note to self: buy another handgun for backup.
Issue a shoot to kill order. Worked in LA
There is a culture of lawlessness and irresponsibility that has been glamorized and promoted in the African American community by many of its most prominent leaders and role models.
Yup, rap/hip-hop music comes to mind.
If you put a wall around the richest white-bread community in America and removed all of the drinking water you would get the exact same results.
B.S. So stealing drugs and guns quenches one's thirst?
well said.....bump
This is the harvest of a culture that was outraged by the 'beating' of Rodney King, but not by the murder of 57 innocent people in the ensuing riots.
Right, they would arm themsleves and shoot at people trying to offer them aid.
You know, think about this for a minute: Let's say you live in NOLA and you stayed behind. And lets say there's a guy up the street who has always really p|ssed you off..
Wouldn't now be the perfect time to "take care of him"?
I wonder how many of the dead will really be the result of post-huriccane crime?
Someone had the b***s to say it. I don't see a lot of white people running around looting and shooting and starting fires. But is anyone really surprised at this?
Not me. But you know how it is: Your not supposed to "notice" that.
