How well has this disaster been handled? 4 years of Homeland Security

Ummm this isn't a Homeland Security issue.

So true. Wow. Call the environmental groups, because apparently New Orleans sinking and risking flooding has deteriorated over a very short time. It must have been some extraordinary earth event. Imagine, in just 4 short years, since Bush took office, New Orleans has sunk into the swamp and now been devastated by a hurricane. Wow, if only it had stared to sink 8 or 12 years ago or longer, Clinton would have done something to save it. And, if it did start earlier than 2000, who were the criminals who concealed it from Clinton to prevent his helping? /sarcasm

The DUmmies have lost it, they're fruity.

Unfortunately, that's because the answer is "walk", and if you can't, you have a huge problem. The buses and trucks are taking people out of the Superdome and other shelters, the people who didn't seek shelter will have to come later.

Why didn't New Orleans city housing codes require lifeboats so residents could escape danger? Lots of cities require fire escapes.

Why didn't Dan Rather do a report on New Orleans's precarious position in this time of increased hurricane activity?

New Orleans Geography

The levee system that has been built along the river, coupled with the canal system to keep the interior of the city dry, prevent the land from being replenished by the annual spring floods. As a result, the land will continue to sink until eventually there will be nothing to stop the waters of the Gulf to rush back upon the fragile land.

Not a bad idea. But realistically if New Orleans had been hit directly by the hurricane, they would be evacuating 5,000 people, not 100,000.

The only real lifeboat is to get out of the city.

I meant the whole city.
And the refineries?

In the case of Katrina, life rafts might have saved lives.

I saw "Survivor" on TV a few times. I was shocked at
the attitude they all took. Instead of trying to
survive, most just sat there waiting for the next
handout. Anyone who had the sense to survive was
voted off fairly soon. It appears that wasn't a fluke
but an American state of mind. I think an effort should be
made to get the kids out of there using the Delta forces
they have dropped into the city. If someone wants to
just sit on his lawn and complain, leave him to his own
devices.

By the way, did he vote for a (democrat) social-security-welfare-state last time arouind?)""

If I had MY WAY, NO ONE who RECEIVES welfare would be allowed to vote. It only becomes a self-perpetuating affliction, IMO.

Wouldn't it just be easier to start over then rebuild at this point?
Actually, that is impossible.
Anywhere else, you'd have to get environmental waivers to build new refineries to replace what's now under water.

And that has been impossible for 20 years.""

I believe it is much closer to 35 years. Early 70's was the last one in the USA.

In the case of Katrina, life rafts might have saved lives.

Sort of the 'parachutes in the WTC' theory revisited. A brief not practical thought.

Much easier to store and deploy than parachutes.

"I just rec'd an email that the hurricane was Bush's fault! Go figure!"

Who ever sent you that email must really have a low opinion of your intelligence.

DemocRATS have all the evidence they need to know that they can count on the stupidity of their voters and supporters. I hope it wasn't a "friend" of yours that sent you the email. LOL
