Jambalaya, a crawfish pie and a file gumbo!......
I wonder what my city's emergency plan looks like...
Sadly, this hurricane is showing the world that New Orleans is no better than Detroit. I lived in New Orleans for 6 years, and loved the city. But after this (looting, etc.), it will be tough to get me to go back.
BUMP to a very sobering article.
>>My question: If the Superdome was supposed to house so many people, why wasn't it set up from the start to do so? How in the world could anyone justify crowding people into this place knowing that it might be cut off for days with no resources?<<
The way I understand it, the Superdome was never intended to "house" people. It is a football stadium. Yet it was wisely utilized, and it saved thousands of lives.
I don't think the we can point our fingers at the Superdome designers, as if the hurricane is somehow their fault.
As the author mentioned, that's why it's called a "disaster." IT SUCKS.
I think the city will be flooded for months. It will take a month minimum to repair the levees enough just to pump the water out.
Problem is, even the police dont know what to do. they have no communications. There is ZERO central command giving them instructions, the police are on their own acting in small groups. The police have little water and food. There are no precinct houses left in many cases. The police are looting food and siphoning gas just to keep their squad cars going. NO Police are even appealing for citizens to turn over guns to the police because they are undergunned by the looters. Apparently messages are being sent by foot.
This is a total SNAFU in terms of inadequate emergency planning combined with a catastrophic disaster.
A week's supplies won't cut it in a disaster on the scale of New Orleans except to keep you alive until and during evacuation.
I have to laugh a little at the eager assertions on the part of the east-coast Dems that it's Bush's fault for not sending more tax money to build up the levees. When your arm's been amputated bandaids don't help.
Are you kidding me? Oh you can bet Jesse Jackson and Sharpton and the other poverty pimps smell the Mother of all Federal grants coming which they can control and siphon off to their cronies.
They are planning furiously right now how to control all of the money that will be for 'the poor'.
Amen. One of my sons married into the Long family. The still sound just like Huey.
I understand that the SD was not designed primarily as a shelter. However, the city's emergency plan apparently did not provide for anything after the main event, including evacuation in the worst case scenario.
The building may have saved thousands of lives, but now those lives are in jeopardy again, because planners did not look at the day after.
I expect the Superdome to be demolished after this fiasco. Can they really clean it throughly after what it's been subjected too? The city is finished anyway.
I understand your point now, and agree.
Actually, that is impossible.Anywhere else, you'd have to get environmental waivers to build new refineries to replace what's now under water.
And that has been impossible for 20 years.
Darwinian selection in action.
At about 1255pm EST, getting my reassurance on our places on this planet, but Rush Limbaugh,I was reassured.
Rush identified CNN staffer one Miles O'Brien, interviewing Governor Haley Barbour. He played the clip. The arrogance of O'Brien comes through. I have seen the enemy - large.
Yeah, but they won't show up until their personal safety is ab-soul-utely ass-ured...............
er' a typo. Should read by Rush Limbaugh- sorry.
I meant the whole city.
They do realize that Reconstruction is all over and Louisiana now has its OWN state Govt right?
