NEW ORLEANS Mayor Ray Nagin ordered 1,500 police officers to leave their search-and-rescue mission last night and return to the streets to stop looting that has turned increasingly hostile as the city plunges deeper into chaos.
"They are starting to get closer to heavily populated areas hotels, hospitals and we're going to stop it right now," Nagin said.
The number of officers called off the search-and-rescue mission amounts to virtually the entire police force in New Orleans.
The out-of-control thievery had escalated while cops joined National Guardsmen in focusing on saving lives.
In some cases, New Orleans police officers took part in the looting. One cop was seen carting off a computer and a 27-inch flat-screen TV, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Earlier yesterday, Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blan- co said she has asked the White House to send more people to help with evacuations and rescues, thereby freeing up National Guardsmen to stop looters.
The looting got worse as people brazenly ran- sacked stores for food, beer, clothing, appliances and guns.
There have been some citizen-vs.-criminal standoffs, with one shopkeeper posting an ominous sign: "You loot, I shoot."

You've mentioned this a couple of times. I've seen plenty of "men" looting in news clips.
There a reason you're hiding behind women and children? The looting is for the chilun????
Well WHAT does?
In Michigan, during hunting season, they call them "sound Shooters".
You know, I heard a sound, so I.............

We Americans have Rules .17 through .510 plus our Jury of 12 (gauge) for self-defense; Rules .223, .308, .357 subsection 9, .44, .45, and the Jury are normal for our day(s) in court (of last resort). A blade is always loaded also.
Looters are involved in a deadly dangerous power trip. Do you think that such predatory rats would not steal your child's last bottle of water or bite of food because they could? Rape? Murder for giving them that "evil" eye? When life is threatened, nothing is sacred to predatory humans; we are seeing this as is Qaeda.
You can bet that Qaeda is planning accordingly seeing this predictable storm damage as a message from their moon god Allah, uaakkkkkkk barf.
We citizens have our 2nd and 14th Amendments affirming that all of us equally have our RTKABA even in the face of the ~20,000+ unConstitutional local and state laws bullying citizens into defenseless. (Read the history of bosses in NYC and Chicago winning their war on ex-slaves and immigrants by ignoring our RATIFIED Constitution.) I am not a lawyer, but I am a Constitutional juror every chance I get.
Learn from Kat's lessons before you have lost the chance. Prepare for hard times. Far fewer victims are unlucky than foolish. Research great ideas and plans in FR's archives et al. Please act in your own interests because you alone are responsible for yourself. Others including The Government MAY help you in time.
I have nothing which I am unwilling to give the needy but I shall defend everything with deadly force against predators.
Princeton (as nice a town as it is) and Mercer County in general, isn't typical of a good part of New Jersey. I would agree with you that most New Jersey kids living along the Route 1 corridor probably couldn't shoot their way out of a cream puff but many kids who live north or south of that area are familiar with guns, have access (legal) to them and use them regularly (hunting & target shooting).
I don't know how much of New Jersey you traveled through when you lived in Princeton but at least 1/3 of the state is very rural, full of farms, fields, woods etc. The recorded deer harvest alone in New Jersey last year by gun and bow was 58,564 deer. That's alot of deer taken by a lot of hunters.
So when do you start the killing? Immediately, or do you wait to see if the looting will escalate into a total breakdown? I value human life too much, to make myself the judge on that call. If someone, is directly threatening the well-being of someone, then by all means, take tha appropriate action. If someone is stealing manufactured items, take the appropriate action, which in this case is apprehension. I just do not think the appropriate action with looters, is to kill them. They arrest looters in Fl, when they have these problems, they do not shoot them. Why shoot them in LA?
Go ahead, rub it in.........*VBG*
I'm hiding behind children?? If you can't stretch anything better than that, just stop trying. I've seen men on tv, but not armed. The police kick them out of stores, and tell them to drop their loot. I don't see anyone shooting unarmed looters, anywhere.
...and so does the looting by thugs, unfortunately.

If you do not know what warrants shooting someone on the spot, then whatever I say, will make no sense to you.
If someone wants to steal my tv it's because they're on my property and in my house and I WILL defend me, my family and my property, otherwise every thief in existence will come to steal my stuff, just sorta like what's happening in NOLA.
You seem to be working from this deluded premisis, that you can just lock people up and that takes care of the problem, or worse yet, just let them go. Both of these premises are false. There's no law enforcement since it was detailed off to save peoples lives (which will be lost now because they have to take care of looters) nor are there any facilities to hold them at.
And if you just let them go, it spreads like a contagion, which we're seeing in NOLA right now.
Yes, that is what I mean, and have been trying to get across for 2 days.
When you "apprehend" them, where are you going to put them? The jail is flooded. They let all the prisoners go, and they are now in the Superdome (which is one of the reasons they're having so many problems over there.) How many police officers are you willing to take off protection and search and rescue to guard a bunch of prisoners standing around in a flooded parking lot?
The reason looters are shot on sight is that there is not enough law enforcement to arrest and hold them and no place to put them.
In Florida, they arrested them if they had the facilities and manpower to do so (some communities did). In NO, the breakdown has been total and police didn't even attempt to arrest the looters because they were completely outnumbered. Their only viable course was to pick off the ringleaders, which would have discouraged the rest.
Don't you see that your "value human life too much" attitude has resulted in MORE deaths, and MORE suffering, than if law enforcement had dealt out the traditional and customary penalty to the first few looters? Then you would have had a few wrongdoers dead, instead of many, many elderly and children dying of thirst, exposure and drowning on rooftops and in attics.
My aunt lived in Mountain Lakes/Denville . . . I didn't notice a lot of shooting/hunting activity up that way, but I may have just been hanging with the wrong crowd, so to speak.
"Call out of the National Guard..."
They're on their way here, I believe.
When they'll get here is anybody's guess.
Yes, I completely agree. If someone breaks into my house, steals my tv, and attempts bodily harm, I will shoot to kill. If they have my tv in their arms, with no weapon and no intent to do me harm, and are too stupid to drop it, when my weapon is pointed at them, then they can have it. I will call the police, and file a claim.
If someone is in an unoccupied Circuit City, with a tv in their arms, and no intent to do anyone any harm, I do not believe they should be killed.
The scenes I saw on tv, did not warrant anyone being killed. If apprehended, an LEO could very easily have tiewrapped or handcuffed the looter to a street sign, and let them sit in water, until they could be taken away.
In this case you aim to maim, not to kill. A shot in the arm or the leg will suffice.
