NEW ORLEANS Mayor Ray Nagin ordered 1,500 police officers to leave their search-and-rescue mission last night and return to the streets to stop looting that has turned increasingly hostile as the city plunges deeper into chaos.
"They are starting to get closer to heavily populated areas hotels, hospitals and we're going to stop it right now," Nagin said.
The number of officers called off the search-and-rescue mission amounts to virtually the entire police force in New Orleans.
The out-of-control thievery had escalated while cops joined National Guardsmen in focusing on saving lives.
In some cases, New Orleans police officers took part in the looting. One cop was seen carting off a computer and a 27-inch flat-screen TV, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Earlier yesterday, Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blan- co said she has asked the White House to send more people to help with evacuations and rescues, thereby freeing up National Guardsmen to stop looters.
The looting got worse as people brazenly ran- sacked stores for food, beer, clothing, appliances and guns.
There have been some citizen-vs.-criminal standoffs, with one shopkeeper posting an ominous sign: "You loot, I shoot."

Exactly! And it isn't simply stealing. It is unchecked lawlessnes that escalates into murder, rape and chaos.
Well said.
Not sure, I guess the National Guard and private citizens.
We saw it yesterday.
I am serious. Please provide some evidence of freepers "delighting" in the looting, and "waxing rhapsodic" about the "'heroes' committing acts of theft". I'd really like to see this.
I'll hazard a guess that you are grossly mischaracterizing other people's posts. Feel free to post the evidence if I'm wrong, though.
Your comments have nothing to do with reality.
You know why prices aren't at $10? BECAUSE of the free market- it works to control excessive prices. The only people who would fall for $10 a gallon when everyone else is charging $3.00 is an idiot.
I'll ask the same question I asked all the other situational socialists who cry gouging:
Would you rather be able to buy gas at $3.50 a gallon, or have no gas to buy at $2.50 a gallon?
Beause the results of "controlling gouging" are the latter.
"You loot, I shoot."
Catchy. I like that.
I could not care less about something made out of plastic and silicon chips, regardless if it belonged to me or BestBuy, when compared to a human life. Even if they are scum. On the other hand, I do not believe that the looters are the problem. I believe that anyone that is armed and shooting at rescue workers or LEOs should be dealt with accordingly. I happen to believe that if someone is looting, with their arms full of tvs, in a shopping area, and from what I've seen, are a lot of kids and women, is not going to be taking pot shots at rescuers. Resuers which are mostly working in residential areas. There is something more here than looting. This is why I do not believe looters should be shot on sight.
I still wonder what kind of moron runs off with a waterlogged TV through a city underwater with possibly no chance of electric service for weeks and no roof over his head.
And also today...
Is that bridge with an ocean front view in Arizona? I'm buying what anyone sells. It's free market dontchaknow!
The same type of moron who loots a grocery store to steal meat that has been unrefrigerated in 100 degree heat for three days.
That's what I see too and its disguisting. I don't care what happens to these animals. But that's not what I was talking about. There is a group of people here that believe that people who steal water or food, even if its for survival, and even if its the only thing they steal, should be shot. Why is it not possible for people to separate the two? They are not the same thing. And just because people refer to the food/water does not mean that they are not outraged by what's actually occurring on a mass scale. Who knows, maybe there is not one single person in NOLA who only took water for survival, but if that person does exist, I don't think they should be shot to death.
.. = a moron that doesn't need to be alive.
Do you believe someone that stupid should be shot...or someone with a weapon?
Yup, always enlightening to see practical examples of how power really does grow from the barrel of a gun.
One reason, I think, is that the mob mentality is here on FR also.
We are all entitled to our opinion, mine is that if they're armed and shoot kill them, if they're stealing and unarmed arrest them.
