ROCKLAND - Non-profit organizations own millions of dollars in property in the city but state law does not allow communities to tax those organizations.

A review by The Courier-Gazette of the proposed new valuations finds that the value of the non-profit holdings have increased this year along with those that are taxed.

Other than government, however, non-profit organizations such as museums, fraternal and civic groups, churches, and private schools own about $40 million in properties which, if taxed, would generate $600,000 annually to the city.

So the suggestion of taxing them is considered news? I think the newspaper's just mad that they have a highly valued, crappy little building with no parking..

In the mid-1990s, the city sent out notices to non-profit organizations asking for voluntary payments in lieu of taxes but fewer than a handful responded with contributions.

LOL!

I get notices like that too, but they usually include offers of free all expense paid vacations to Leavenworth Kansas.
