Michael Savage says it's time to do what Nixon did - - price controls Remember the results? I recall they failed miserably, caused shortages and rationing depending whether your license plate was odd/even, etc.

We may have to do it and we may have to ration too. This developing crisis will get worse before it improves. The alternative is to allow inflation to rise at 20%/year until we achieve a new stability. That is what will happen if we allow a tripling of fuel prices over a 1 year period.

His Savage Truth encourages socialist controls.
The President can reduce gas taxes, eliminate EPA restrictions, threaten to release oil reserves, etc. to stem what might be true price gouging.
However, Savage's faith in free markets is apparently very fragile.
I can't see how he's a true conservative.

When the libs talk about loud, obnoxious, "right-wing" radio hosts -- this is who they're referring to.

Until people got sick of waiting in gas lines.
Man. Think things through.

Mike's off his meds again. Price controls caused many of the shortages of the '70s. What we need is REAL COMPETITION for the oil companies....for instance, can't some sharp engineer out there design an engine that will burn alcohol, and still have the same range as a gasoline engine? How about a hybrid pickup that actually has the power to be useful and isn't butt ugly like most hybrids are? Fuel cells, anyone?
If this isn't the kick in the ass Detroit needs to get off of gasoline, nothing ever will be! This economy can't stand four or five dollars a gallon, and that's where we're headed! Let's have some good old American smarts to come up with a REAL solution, not the failed ideas of the past!

I called in. I was steve from Oklahoma City. He hung up on me as I politely started to explain to him how the oil markets worked.

We don't get Savage in our market, but I always assumed that he had a clue..And now you see that he has no clue at all.

I heard that too today. He started his show with this crap.
He thinks that Conservatives are hypocrites on the subject because Richard Nixon once did it.
Richard Nixon, Conservative?
He is also supportive of the minimum wage.

His statement was awful. I'm glad he is back in DC to help rehabilitate his image (which took a horrible beating this August), but today's statement was uninspiring and 'know nothing' - that is, nothing presented as to what he is going to do that would ease the concerns of the regular folks.

Actually, if Dubya did it for 30 or 60 days it would make him look interested in it (instead of todays know-nothing statement) and add some juice to his popularity. Until the oil companies simply held gasoline off the market until the 60 days were up.
Are you nuts?

A better solution is if GWB executive ordered some closed refineries open. You know, the ones that are just sitting there closed because they couldn't meet the environmental requirements.

First, I think it will get better, but that is debateable. Anyway, if you ration and put on price caps, then the market price stays artificially low, thus discouraging conservation and new technologies. You thus take a temporary problem and make it a permenant one.

Yeah, bring back stagflation.Price controls do not affect inflation at all. They are often a result of inflation and do make economic relations much more difficult and inefficient.
