I am awake this morning. Frankly I am not giving a damn about the NO levee board. Maybe it is a phase here but NO is gone.

It is hard to wrap the mind around. NO is gone. People are wandering out. Many are dying. The rest is just static.

Maybe the time will come in the endless post mortems that the NO levee board will be discussed in a long article. But this is like some kind of On the Beach scenario going on here. The NO levee board is past being relevant.

Or that is just how it feels right now.

Yesterday I talked to two people who were going to donate to the relief effort but changed their minds after seeing just how lawless it's gotten in NO.

They felt that the money could end up in the hands of some of those looters to help THEM and so won't do it.

NO is gone, is right.

I think you hit more than a few nails and more than a few idiots on the head.

I hadn't realized that the corruption and violence routinely active in the area was so great in addition to the voodoo and MardiGras spirit; rampant sexual acting out etc.

Reminds me of this thread:

27 CHRISTIAN PROPHETIC EXCERPTS FROM 1940 UNTIL NOW.

It is beginning to feel like the docs on that thread are a lot more accurate than I ever wanted them to be.

From the lead editorial in today's WSJ:

The Energy Bill just signed by President Bush contains half a billion dollars for coastal restoration funds for Louisiana alone. The Army Corps' much maligned levees keep New Orleans safe from spring flooding, and its planned $700 million, 72 mile Morganza-to-the-Gulf of Mexico levee might have held Katrina at bay, were it not at least a decade from completion.

If their "luck" had just held a bit longer, . . .

Not to say the local gov't couldn't have done more.

Denial, anger, grief, depression, acceptence. Even if you don't fit the profile, I've been watching different people go through different stages of it, here and across the nation, since before the storm.

There's an interesting dynamic in play with an event of this magnitude. As the center of the bell curve goes through each successive phase, their combined reaction is affecting the outcome of the very chain of events that set the process in motion.

I would say it's fascinating, but I suspect the truth is that its simply easier to watch all of this from one or more steps removed.
