For those who are waiting on posts from the people that are connected to the scanner feed - Radio communications have slowed down as things are under control now.

Hopefully things have improved for the precinct since last night. This is insane. These thugs should be treated as enemy combatants. Just shoot them.

Here's the problem too. Violent crime in NO is nothing new, it's just exacerbated because of the storm.

New Orleans is listed as the number 3 most stressful place in the US to live...reason "violent crime."

Seems to me that if people were more in "polite society" (ala Heinlein) mode, the looting would be less likely because the "citizens" would not be so certain the criminal element is the armed element.

Not so sure about there being a direct correlation there. Based on their looting choices, the looters don't seem to be particularly capable of the sort of forward thinking that would cause them to be polite. If anything, they'd probably have armed sooner, and made sure to shoot first.

If I'm right, the only way the shooting becomes "less likely" is through attrition.

I really don't think the looters are civilized. They're more like jackals.

"Perimeter established Gate A through C."

These guys are as cool as the other side of the pillow.

God bless every one of 'em.

I saw that. I also saw whoever was filming it leave the little girl behind crying.

That is what stunned me. Who leaves a child in that situation, even if you are there to film?!?

Thanks, this has been fascinating, albeit, a bit frightening / disgusting.

There are relief here throughout the state. I expect a lot of these people will be relocating to Arkansas, at least temporarily. I'm sure Texas and Oklahoma will get a fair share too, and apparently Missouri is as well, based on news out of Springfield last night. Hopefully, many will have enough sense not to return to a location where it could happen again. I just hope the criminal element that is running rampant down there is not among the exports.

Superdome Evacuation Halted Amid Gunfire

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050901/ap_on_re_us/katrina_superdome_evacuation_hk1
3 minutes ago

NEW ORLEANS - The evacuation of the Superdome was suspended Thursday after shots were reported fired at a military helicopter and arson fires broke out outside the arena. No immediate injuries were reported.

The scene at the Superdome became increasingly chaotic, with thousands of people rushing from nearby hotels and other buildings, hoping to climb onto the buses taking evacuees from the arena, officials said. Paramedics became increasingly alarmed by the sight of people with guns.

I nearly wet my pants last night when Chris Matthews was interviewing Gov Perry & Chris asked him, "How did you get the Astros out?", Perry said, "Chris, they haven't played there for 10 years!".

Someone give me a stick. I need to beat Soledad O'Brian over the head. She's wailing about laying blame...

no - buses are still moving - They have a convoy of 104 (104 buses lined up = 2 1/2 miles long) on the highway shoulder - they move in 10 towards the dome - then they ask another 10 to come in to the back of the convoy line - the other 400 buses are at a Texaco Station waiting to get into the convoy line

First 10 buses went in - the call for the next 10 buses to get in line has already happened before all the excitement - Still waiting to hear them call in the next 10 from the front of the convoy - I assume they are still loading the first 10 in.
