There's some actual news about conditions in Pass Christian and Long Beach - areas about which we haven't heard much.

see the video on last post of gulfport. you would not believe the scene. Biloxi is just about gone.
..and they wonder why they were KILLED!
I heard Skip Pickering talk tonight on Greta about MS - he said, almost as an aside, "We have hundreds dead". So I thought, hundreds dead just in MS? And he probably is underestimating, as most of them do.
When this is all said and done, the figure will be in the thousands.
While the MSM had it's sites on New Orleans, the people of Gulfport/Biloxi knew it was coming. I guess they thought it couldn't be that bad...
This is why the comparisons with the Tsunami or 9/11 are not helpful. There will be another disaster of this nature, so it is OK to be a bit preachy about the lessons of this one. That said, it is still very, very sad. Many could not leave, at least not reasonably easily, so something can be done about that. Watching the Super Dome, I kept wondering about busing the people to safe areas using city buses.
City officials said they could not immediately re-establish water or sewer services. All land phone lines and most cell phone communications were out of service, they said, and crews were trying to repair a major gas leak downtown.
Tons of chicken parts, which had been stored for shipping in the port area, ended up scattered across dozens of blocks west of the city.
"That's going to become a biohazard in no time," said Sullivan, the fire chief. "We'll need fast help with that, too." ...***
"Hurricane Katrina cost more lives ... than any disaster in Coast history, the Red Cross said Tuesday.
Hmmm, me thinks the Red Cross spokesperson wasn't around for the "coastal" hurricane hit on Galveston Island that took over 6000 lives.

I found out yesterday that a coworker's brother is missing in Gulfport. She begged him to evacuate and he said the storm probably won't be as bad as predicted, blah, blah, blah. She hasn't heard from him since. He lives a quarter-mile from the water. Prayers to all who are missing, searching and rescuing. This is just unbelievable. You only hear about this damage in India or South America.
So far our preparedness seems to be a total failure. When you have hundreds of people on a freeway bridge standing all day yesterday in the hot sun within sight of the Super Dome and they haven't seen a single relief agency in 48 hours, there is NO emergency help available. The head of FEMA has no communication with other agencies in 2005. No one has the sense to have boats available in a flooded city with no truck access. The only successful agents working yesterday was the Coast Guard and the National Guard helicopters. There is MUCH to answer for after this horrible foul-up.
You know, I actually admire this man. I have pets, and I love them too. If disaster was about to strike my home, I would have a hard time imposing a death sentence on these defenseless creatures, who God created also.
I can't recommend trying to "ride out" a CAT 4 hurricane, but this guy has my respect.
I have been saying this for days. If they had somehow made arrangements for people's dogs to be cared for, less would be on rooftops awaiting rescue.
I am serious. This is an important issue. Much could be learned from this experience.
It was a CAT 5 Hurricane, 400 miles wide, 48hrs before it hit.
It was pretty clear the gulf coast would be annihilated, well before it happened.
Hope they can get fresh water and provisions to those poor people in time.
