This is a sad, heavy report...and doesn't even include New Orleans yet. I fear the death toll indeed will be in the many thousands.
I pray the authorities in New Orleans get a handle on the civil unrest that is growing there amidst the tens of thousands trapped in the city. Many lessons to be learned from this, and not just by the "authorities", but also by all citizens if they are watching closely.
I pray we can all help in whatever way possible from our various circumstances to relieve the suffering and help those people find shelter and then permanent homes.

Feeding First Responders
The Salvation Army is currently providing services to storm victims and first responders in the Gulf Coast states.
A $100 donation to The Salvation Army will feed a family of four for two days, provide two cases of drinking water and one household clean-up kit, containing brooms, mops, buckets, and cleaning supplies.
