"Did you just hear the professor on CNN? His estimates are in the thousands..... anybody catch that?" Yes. I rewound my videotape and here are the basics:
Wolf Blizer was interviewing Ivor Van Heerden of the LSU Hurricane Center. Wolf said that he heard there may be thousands who died.
Dr. Heerden said, "I understand that 80% of the people followed the order to evacuate. That means that there were 250,000 to 300,000 people who were left in New Orleans. According to our computer models, 1/3 of those have drowned."
If my figures are correct, that would mean that he estimates the dead in NO to number between 80,000 and 100,000.!!!! WOW!!! Can that be true???

According to the guy's computer models...
Remember, "global warming" and "nuclear winter" were "proven" by computer models...and subsequently "disproven" by other computer models.
Computer models are subject to "garbage in, garbage out."

There are plenty of dead people ~ those arguing about the number are just wasting their time ~ when the water recedes, we'll know.

Update: President's meeting with officials is still ongoing and he may be a few minutes late according to Neil Cavuto.

Thank you. Depends upon assumptions in the models, of course. But dramatic figures, indeed. Caught my attention when I heard it.

"I understand that 80% of the people followed the order to evacuate. That means that there were 250,000 to 300,000 people who were left in New Orleans"
That would mean that the total population (including both those who evacuated and those who stayed) is between 1,250,000 and 1,5000,000. I assume he's talking about the NO Metro area, not the city itself., since Orleans Parish has only 469,000 residents according to the 2000 Census.
I pray to God that there were far less than 300,000 who did not evacuate, and that far less than 1/3 of them drowned.

Only time will tell, but I hope your predictions are incorrect. I have a sinking feeling though, that you are right.
