Well I personally would rather combine my sources of information. You are questioning the integrity of My Favorite Headache, which has never proving to make false reports in the past. Where did you hear helicopters/planes have a limit of 50 miles??? Last time I checked, helicopters could go about 300 - 400nm... Just as a refresher, I went and looked:
http://www.bellhelicopter.textron.com/en/aircraft/commercial/prodSpecs206B-3.cfmThat is the Bell 206B-3, one of the MOST POPULAR helicopters for news organizations. Lets cut that 300 miles in half, because of the return trip. That means 150 nm (172 statute miles) from the Bay of St. Louis would place Lafayette (LA), Baton Rouge (LA), Jackson (MS), Mobile (AL), and Pensacola (FL) all WELL within range of a safe trip to the location, and back, WITH fuel for time to film. Baton Rouge would be the BEST location, due to how close it is. (150 miles from Baton Rouge to the AL-MS state line... PLENTY of fuel to cover that area.) They obviously MUST be withholding information for SOME reason. I just cannot believe NO ONE in the news room has thought "ya know... maybe we should get some aerials of the Mississippi/Alabama coastline...."
Here is the map.... click on it to make it larger:

Sorry, I was being sarcastic to make my point. But you did an outstanding Freeper job here of unearthing the relevant facts.
Obviously, there are plenty of locations from which aircraft can survey the area.
FRegards!
