The Salvation Army is the best org. to give to. We have (fortunately) limited flood experience here (S.W. Pa.). My mother-in-law's property flood yearly...(and she does have flood insurance, and it doesn't cover much...but that is another thread). The Red Cross gives 'cleaning kits' (a box w/bottles of bleach/rubber gloves, a mop and broom). These are usually given out at photo ops w/local politician types in tow. Then the Red Cross goes away. They are done. The Salvation Army, however, brings their canteen trucks thru day after day (during the clean up) offering bottled water, boxed meals, etc. The Salvation Army does a huge service.
If my Denomination wasn't in the thick of things I would agree but they are and they are good. Having been through 4 major floods in Central Texas in the last 7 years I have seen them at work and the Salvation Army and My Church's Denominational workgroup have done the most.
During the four Hurricanes in Florida last year our Denomination was cooking meals for the Salvation Army to distribute. As a matter of fact we beat the Salvation Army into the area because of the ties to local churches. And the leaders of the Salvation army were impressed by the effiency of our operation.
