It's a terrible shame that so many people have to perish in a natural disaster like this. There were a bunch of people that couldn't leave New Orleans because of the traffic, wasn't there? All we can do is wish the best for the families of the affected families, and be glad we are in Mid texas where it didn't even rain.It was 101 degrees in Madisonville today,so we wern't affected in any way by the hurricane.I guess the good Lord finally decided we were getting a little too smug in the US and were due for some kind of wake up call.It has been many years since i have been to Bilouxi,or even Gulf Port, and when i was there I was in a 15 foot outboard, headed for the florida coast by way of the intercoastal canal, and the Mississippi River. It was a fun trip but this tradgedy kinda ruins what little fun we did have.

There is a reason it's been so quite.
Had read on another thread that the cable programs are showing a lot of repeat material tonight. That seemed odd; maybe this is why. How in the world is the media going to present this....so tragic.

You are right. I live 2 miles from the beach and hauled ass when they started talking cat 5. My dad forced me to go also, being the former safety officer at Keesler he knew what could happen. I escaped quick on the back roads, for some reason nobody takes the back roads when evacuating. I am sure I will have friends that are no more.

We need to remember that the officials/rescuers are concentrating on the living right now, not stopping to count the dead. At this point they are in full rescue mode, trying to get as many survivors as possible to safety. I think that is why we haven't seen numbers yet ... it isn't necessarily a sign of the withholding of information or the blocking of bad news.

Guess we know now why "W" hasn't spoken to the nation......He'll be the one to break the news to us....or speak shortly after it is reported.

They showed a video of Bolixi a while ago...it looked like someone puked on it...it was sticks and clothes...for about a quarter mile in from the beach...everything was flattened..and I know haw many houses, buildings used to be there...I think Mississippi got the worst of it...
Why isn't the MSN there..because they are all camped in New Orleans trying to get the Peter jennings award....
To: dixiechick2000
oh, good Lord, no.

The surge seems to have been worse than Camile's, perhaps because this storm was so HUGE. The Hurricane Center downgraded too soon, it seems. Probably a STRONG cat-4 on landfall...same magnitude as the 1886 storm that wiped out a Texas town.

Heath Carpenter, with Mississippi Emergency Mgt., is on WDSU saying the toll could triple from the 100 or so reported now. He said they are working with the coroner to confirm deaths. He says he doesn't want loved ones to give up hope.
