Katrina destroys Brett Favre's family home

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre spent most of Monday and today nervously waiting to hear from family members in his hometown of Kiln, Miss., in the heart of the Gulf Coast area devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

The Packers said Favre finally spoke to his mother, Bonita Favre, late this afternoon when she was able to reach him with the help of a Houston television station, which was in the area covering hurricane damage.

According to the team, Favre said his mother reported spending Monday night in the family attic, along with his grandmother, after the entire house filled up with water within a matter of 5-10 minutes.

Bonita Favre indicated that the family home was destroyed and probably would have to be bulldozed, but said that everyone in the family appeared to be fine.

Bonita, along with Brett's brothers Jeff and Scott, had decided against evacuating and instead gathered at Favre's childhood home in Hancock County, one of the counties hit hardest by the hurricane. Favre said his grandmother, aunt and other family members also were there.

Favre said earlier today that he spoke to his wife, Deanna, Monday night and again this morning. He said she and their two children, 16-year-old Brittany and 6-year-old Breleigh, are safe at Favre's home in Hattiesburg, 60 miles north of Kiln, although their property had extensive damage.

Favre's mother was seven months pregnant with him when Hurricane Camille, which killed 256 people in Louisiana and Mississippi in 1969, struck the area.

"I've seen pictures," Favre said. "The damage was unbelievable."

Favre admitted he was "kind of going through the motions" in practice while waiting to hear from family members and said he plans to go home to Mississippi following Thursday night's preseason finale at Tennessee.

He said he could get permission from coach Mike Sherman to skip the game altogether and fly there immediately, but his wife told him there's no point because the area is unreachable.

He is no more important than anyone else and neither is his family. It's nice to know some media outlet got him hooked up with his family. I'm sure they are helping all the rest of the folks down there.

Were (satch9) you born an idiot or did you work hard all your life to be that way? I can tell by the tone of your very hateful posts that you have a problem with the rich and famous.

Brett Favre has earned our respect. He has publicly gone through a lot and has born his crosses publicly with class and grace. He is a man's man. He also is important to his community and gives of himself a lot. His time, image and money.

Have you given to your community lately? Have you helped been the face of optimism when everything is bad?

Asshats like you are quick to talk about how athletes today are spoiled brats. But when one is as everyday real and as good an example as Brett Favre, you only whine like a little baby "he isn't so special."

He is special. And you owe him an apology -- in your heart if nowhere else.

"And you will be amazed (if Brett asks for it) how much he could raise from Packer's fans to support those other thousands. "

He won't even have to ask for it. You can count on that.

I grew up disliking the Packers. I was a Cowboy fan and could name most of the players Don Merideth et al. Dan Reeves coached us in the off season. When Bret Farve and Reggie White went to Green Bay it changed my attitude. I forgave Jerry Kramer and Ray Nitchke and now root for the Pack. Farve has made a lot of us Cowboy, Falcon, and St. Louis fans change to root to the Pack.

I'm a Bears fan so you can imagine what I think of him but you miss the point. It isn't that he is any more important than anyone else but that he is a name many of us know (oh, God do we know) and many love hence it becomes personal. He is like a cousin in our concern. None of us feel as sorry for him as for the poor schlep who had little to begin with and now has nothing. He can just build another platial mansion.

Some people are just jerks.

I hope Brett builds his mom one hell of a new house. I'm sure he will.

Can I be an Arbiter of Pity? Does it pay well? I can add it to my other titles: Dispenser of Mercy and Avenger of Evil.

I went to the Rams vs. Packers in Green Bay last year. It was Monday Night Football AND COLD and we lost.

Rams lost, but I felt like I had been to a white guy's kind of "Mecca".

Farve=Class Act.
