Katrina destroys Brett Favre's family home

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre spent most of Monday and today nervously waiting to hear from family members in his hometown of Kiln, Miss., in the heart of the Gulf Coast area devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

The Packers said Favre finally spoke to his mother, Bonita Favre, late this afternoon when she was able to reach him with the help of a Houston television station, which was in the area covering hurricane damage.

According to the team, Favre said his mother reported spending Monday night in the family attic, along with his grandmother, after the entire house filled up with water within a matter of 5-10 minutes.

Bonita Favre indicated that the family home was destroyed and probably would have to be bulldozed, but said that everyone in the family appeared to be fine.

Bonita, along with Brett's brothers Jeff and Scott, had decided against evacuating and instead gathered at Favre's childhood home in Hancock County, one of the counties hit hardest by the hurricane. Favre said his grandmother, aunt and other family members also were there.

Favre said earlier today that he spoke to his wife, Deanna, Monday night and again this morning. He said she and their two children, 16-year-old Brittany and 6-year-old Breleigh, are safe at Favre's home in Hattiesburg, 60 miles north of Kiln, although their property had extensive damage.

Favre's mother was seven months pregnant with him when Hurricane Camille, which killed 256 people in Louisiana and Mississippi in 1969, struck the area.

"I've seen pictures," Favre said. "The damage was unbelievable."

Favre admitted he was "kind of going through the motions" in practice while waiting to hear from family members and said he plans to go home to Mississippi following Thursday night's preseason finale at Tennessee.

He said he could get permission from coach Mike Sherman to skip the game altogether and fly there immediately, but his wife told him there's no point because the area is unreachable.

Prayers for the Favre family - just because you are rich and famous doesn't mean you don't suffer just like anyone else...he's certainly had alot of personal heartache as have everyone else who have family and loved ones in that entire region. What makes Americans a strong society is our ability to care and reach out to help each other in times of disaster. This is definitely a time where we need to help each other out and keep the negative opinions to ourselves at this time.

I think he should have taken the high road and just not commented.

It's been said, but Farve didn't want this attention, but to talk to his family.

No one forced him to comment on this thread and to do so in such a rude and crude way makes me wonder....

I actually like him. I think he is a stand up guy unlike a great deal of his peers. He isn't a media whore and I do respect him for that. I just hate hero worship and favoritism.

What makes this any more tragic than anyone else's life.

It isn't, but people feel like they know the famous. Stories about them help to personalize the news, and help spread it to others, which can help when areas are in need of relief.

Your right he is no more important that any other human being in this world, but I know that quite a bit of his salary goes back into both Green Bay and To Kiln and Hattisburg MS. So he does help a lot of people down there.

Sorry to see that you have such a jaded view of events.

I pray that Mr. Favre's family is safe and feel badly for them, just as I do for everyone else on the Gulf Coast. But to highlight a celebrity during this mess is very poor taste on the part of the press. He has money to help them.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of people without the resources of Brett Favre who became homeless yesterday.

I see you are flying a Wisconsin flag, so there goes the Bear fan angle, unless you are one of those Kenosha/border types. :)

I just hate hero worship and favoritism.

What hero worship? What favoritism?
This is just a mere story in a sad news day that people are commenting on. Just that the person in question happens to play professional football.
It's not like Favre is a Hollywood actor or something
(well he did star in "There's Something About Mary," but that's besides the point).

I can really feel much more for the random people I see in trouble. I guess I'm just funny that way. I'm happy his family is OK. I just pity the ones who aren't.

who said this is hero worship? I have respect for the man and I am a packers fan so it does matter to me! Like mike in Iraq said you did not have to enter this thread.

Many times, the face of a well-known person will cause the scope of a tragedy to hit home.

Think of Barbara Olson in the 9/11 attacks.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of people without the resources of Brett Favre who became homeless yesterday.

And you will be amazed (if Brett asks for it) how much he could raise from Packer's fans to support those other thousands.

(even after that whole Reggie White fund-raising debacle)

Some media outlet got him hooked up with his family. If that is not favoritism I don't know what is.

I think Miami of Ohio has some talent,

I think they'll win the MAC. But all that gets you is a trip to the Motor City Bowl.
