Real world alert--many of these "poor souls" are looting Wal Mart's expensive items. They are there to LOOT, not to eat. They stayed behind to LOOT, not to eat MREs from the Red Cross.

Bourbon Street is one to two feet above sea level so the water there shouldn't get higher than a couple feet or so.

Thanks. That's what I thought, but wondered if I missed news of a river levee break.

It looked to me the water had pretty much equalized by this point. Is it now rising again because there is water rapidly draining into the lake, thereby pushing more into NO, or the plug attempt had stalled things for awhile?

I've had a lump in my gut ever since Katrina started strengthening after Fla. This thing is going to get uglier before it gets better.

I don't even want to speculate the hit the economy is going to take.

PS. I typoed.. I meant to say that the French Quarter as a whole is one to two feet above sea level. Others have posted 2.5 ft for Bourbon St, which is even better. The flood waters are only supposed to get to around 3 ft or so above sea level.

The failing levee is on a large canal that connects into the Lake. This flooding scenario has been well-known for decades. The back side of levees are not strong and, especially on the canals, are prone to weaken when they become waterlogged due to water behind them.

They also stayed behind to loot the million-dollar homes in expensive neighborhoods, according to CNN.

When this is all done, a lot of questions need to be asked why the governor didn't enforce a full, mandatory evacuation (with public transportation for the poor) out of the city.

It would have been a lot easier to bus them out before the storm than it will be tomorrow.

Interview of mayor on WWL TV I just finished watching via streaming video. Pumping Station 6 has failed. When the breach first appeared, the pump was able to keep up with the inflow by pumping the overflow water into the canal. Mayor claims it was his #1 priority this morning to get sandbags in place to plug the breach. He claimed that someone dropped the ball and didn't get that done. It appears that the breach problem is now past the point of no return. The city will fill with water until it equilibrates with the water level of the lake ( = 3 feet above sea level.)

I didn't know Walmart had any. Seriously, this loot is going to be of little value in a town with no food, water, electricity, sewer system, and plenty of rats, snakes, and fire ants. And I doubt the National Guard is going to help the looters carry the loot to high ground.

God love the men and women on the lines fighting the good fight, but this has been an administrative nightmare from day one.

They had the Democrat Governor of Louisiana, Kathleen Blanco, on NPR this afternoon. Even the NPR host was asking the basic question:

"Did you and the mayor of New Orleans wait too long to give the mandatory evacuation order."

Gov Blanco said they suggested to people that they leave starting Saturday. The NPR host repeated the question, and the Governor gave an answer to a question that was never asked.

Now that the prisoners and remaining inhabitants have to be evacuated at nightfall, in the middle of a disaster area, her actions (or inactions) should be scrutinized. I don't blame the hurricane on her of course (like the liberals are blaming Bush for it). This was an act of the Almighty.

But I was watching the weather channel Friday afternoon. Was she? What the hell were these people thinking?
