I have always thought the foundation of our culture was the concept of self determination and responsibility for one's actions.

You thought wrong.
The foundation of our laws was freedom and self determination. What made that possible was the culture, and most important of the cultural traits were the Christian ethics.

Nope. Christianity. Self determination is a derivitive of free will, given from God. Responsibility for your own actions??? Have you MET a liberal recently?
