Emotions ran high for an army soldier's funeral in Martinsville Sunday.
Sgt. Jeremy Doyle's sacrifice, brought many out to honor him but also sparked a standoff on a city street.
People arriving to say goodbye to a hometown hero, met an altogether different scene in Martinsville. Demonstrators dragging American flags on the ground and holding signs opposing U. S. troops.
"The thing that got us here is that Sgt. Doyle died for us to give us our freedom and then you have people like this to come and it's ridiculous. It's absurd," one funeral attendee told News 8.
Tension grew before the demonstrators finally left their location, right across the street from Army Sgt. Jeremy Doyle's funeral service.
According to the group's website, it sees American deaths in Iraq as a kind of punishment for social misdeeds. Martinsville residents said the protesters picked the wrong time and the wrong town to express their views.

This group is not a part of our tent. The Phelps whack-jobs are straight D's, you know...from the bright yellow and red tent that houses the clowns and side show acts.
The article I read from the Indy Star was pretty good. Mostly, the story focused on how Martinsville turned out to show their respect, lining the streets with flags and everyone standing along the roadway saluting, taking off their hats, waving signs saying thank you, etc.
Citizens of Martinsville really turned out to show their support. And the Indy Freepers really got organized. :)
I think those paying their respects to this fallen soldier should all recieve a Nobel prize for self control...
"I would've waded into these a**holes with a flailing baseball bat."
My sentiments exactly. Some things are worth getting arrested over. Free speech my a$$... a sign that reads "thank god for dead soldiers" displayed at a soldier's funeral is inciting a riot as far as I'm concerned. And yet the mourners tolerated it... that's really something.
Yep---wish we ould post artices from the Star on here too. Why they don't permit it---I'll never know.
She has been an anti-war activist since before her son went to Iraq. She is part of the "Impeach President Bush" tour. She may only be being fed "talking points" because she has trouble expressing herself coherently. Ms. Sheehan is far more than a naive, grieving mother who doesn't want other's children to die in war.
The Star will not allow us to post because they've gone lib. When Dennis Ryerson took over we lost all hope of fair media coverage. The few conservative writers/editors left in a The Great Gannett Exodus. Nobody likes working for Gannett but the Ds, because all they do is filter the AP stories and get to sit at their desks playing solitaire all day.
I miss Andrea Neal, she was great. The Star used to represent Indianapolis and Indiana in general. Remember when it had opinions that matched your own, and those of other Hoosiers?
The Stars numbers are down thanks to blogs and forums like FreeRepublic. So, I say we just keep getting our news elsewhere and the problem will solve itself.
Morris Dees before Phelps
I am very happy they are being unmasked for the hate filled turds they truly are.
Eventually someone is going to lose control and pop one of these a$$holes in the face.
Somone ought to have a fund set aside for bail for the hero that finally does this.
Yes..it's the same flag dragging cult.
The wackos from Kansas protesting in front of the Mortuary in Martinsville In. 8/28/05 during the funeral service for a soldier who was killed in Iraq a week ago.
That's that Baptist preacher, right? Hmmmmm.... I wonder what Jesus would say.
It's true, Ern. Check him out. No one holds all Baptists in contempt because of one crackpot.
Probably something along the lines of... say... Get away from me, I never knew you, and you never knew me?
the infowarrior
She is naive as are most of the people on the left.
I did check out the website. I have a sneaking suspicion this is a front for a KKK or neo-nazi group.
Anyone know what there attitude is toward Israel? If they are anti-Israel, then I am confident they are neo-nazis. The Bible says that Satan's henchmen can appear as ministers of light.
I found a site called Baptistwatch.org. They have plenty to say about this guy. They even have a write-up (kinda long - I only read part of it but that was enough)explaining how this guy became a monster. He was a lawyer and was disbarred. He has 13 kids, and was (is?) a terrible abuser. It's very sad and very sick. This guy should be in a mental ward.
I checked out wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rev._Fred_Phelps
I found one of my suspicions were justified:"The only congregants to stand by Phelps were George Stutzman and the Hockenbargers, Charles, Karl, and Charles William (called Bill by fellow congregants), members of the Christian Identity sect of the Ku Klux Klan, and the men's families."
"What group was this?"--- Unemployable Democrats for indefinite length unemployment benefits?
My sentiments exactly.
My sentiments exactly.
These protesters aren't liberals. They're a bizarre group of Baptists who claim that American combat deaths are willed by God as a penalty for our coddling of homos.
