Good word, hork
I read down the whole thread waiting to see when the bus reached his stop. He had it coming.
I heard that there are dead bodies still floating around, how sad.
Let's review the bidding: The most respected hurricane expert over the last half-century holds a view on global-warming which is contrary to conventional wisdom and so his research money was cut off by Al Gore.
The Clinton years are like an everlasting nightmare. Good find, and thanks for posting this.
That was certainly not a regular poster. Anyone can sign up and post hateful things to make FR look bad. The Admin moderators have been working overtime handling these trolls, but they can't catch them until they are reported.
Thanks for catching that, BTW.
The news doesn't seem to tell how far north of Mobile the flooding is.
I can't get ahold of my sister and her husband. They have a new baby and I've been calling their cell phone since Sunday morning. They live on the water in Mobile and I'm hoping that the only reason I can't reach them is because they left and their cell phone is out of reach.
The other option they had was to go to a house north of Mobile where there are some hills.
Anyone have any idea about the flooding there?
Salvation Army volunteers are assigned to attempt to locate individuals in affected areas that have personal requests for health and welfare status. It may take time to get a response, but this form is worth filling out.

I'm a little too terrified to find out about my brother and his fiance who also live in Mobile. His company refused to close and made them work until 11:00 p.m. on Sunday. He and his fiance were going to her aunt's house in the hills above Mobile.
I just would like to know the extent of the damage up there. I can't get ahold of anyone.

Thanks
Yes, those areas can sustain some communities, but not the massive development that's been going up.
I wonder what are the safest parts of the country to live in as far as natural disasters go.
The Gulf Coast and the Atlantic from Norfolk to Florida are threatened by hurricanes; any city on the Pacific Coast, including Anchorage, could be flattened by an earthquake; Phoenix and Las Vegas are growing rapidly in land not fit for humans, and could run out of water.
In the rest of the country, you can freeze, lose your power to ice storms, get flattened by a tornado, or suffer a heat wave, but nothing that will make your whole city uninhabitable. Nothing's ever going to destroy Boston, Chicago, Dallas, or Atlanta.
I'm not sure where I'm going with this, except that maybe we should do something from keeping the most dangerous or marginal landscapes in the country from being the FASTEST growing, most heavily-developed new cities.
And PLEASE, don't make them the retirement communities!
Humble apologies . . . didn't even see it was Getty . . .
Never happen.
Frankly, as far as natural disasters go, I'd rather be in hurricanes than earthquakes. At least with a hurricane you have some warning and time to get out, whereas with an earthquake...
(sneaks a peak at Mt. Rainier, slumbering quietly to the south...)
I was in the northern eye wall of Andrew (165++ mph). These pictures are very reminiscent of the aftermath, except we didn't have this much water. A few feet of it for a day or so, but not like this. The wind damage was worse, but the flooding here makes this storm worse overall in my estimation.
We didn't have a whole lot of looting after Andrew, after a couple of looters were shot by some of the locals and it was reported on the news. One guy was shot in the face, and it was gruesome. Not much looting after that..
Done.

I disagree....you could always pack up your pets and keep driving.....instead of leaving the loved ones behind to a perceived death....how sick is that? Very selfish. Unconscionable in my opinion.
The Mobile flooding only went in about 1/2 mile, but it did cause extensive damage in some of the beach communities and the historic district. Overall, people in Mobile escaped personal harm, but property damage is extensive.

Ouch.
Just heard that what I was afraid of last night is happening down that way right now.
Mississippi flooding due to rain further north.
Thank you! Info helps!
It is pretty stupid, but I understand your sentiments. Let me tell you something though, your animals have a greater chance of survival in your home, in such a storm, than you do. I have seen first hand the destruction of a Cat 5 storm, houses reduced to rubble, and pets walking out scared but unscathed! They have a way of finding nooks and crannies to hide in.
NerdDad from Columbus checking in. We have damage at our place. Tree took out all lines (electric, cable, phone). Will have to have 2 new poles, transformer and lines re-strung. No estimate on time to repair. Columbus has hundreds of trees and power lines down.
We are safe, no damage seen at first glance to the house. We have a place to stay that has power.
Our son's girlfriend is from Biloxi but staying with us. She talked to her dad in Biloxi last nite. He said they are still trying to find some of the casinos. Those they have found are either grounded (one across Hwy 90) or sinking. They live just around the corner from the McDonalds in several of the pictures on this thread. They got a little water in their laundry room and trees down in the yard but no structural damage to their house.
