Lots of us went to really good schools and had really good history classes/teachers/profs, and didn't learn about Louisiana parishes. My elementary education in Newport (Cocke County), Tennessee. Moonshine and cock fighting capital of America.
Secondary education in the metropolis of Kingsport. One place or the other, I learned of the Louisiana difference.

I learned about Town One, Range One in the Western Reserve growing up in NE Ohio.
Didn't learn about Parishes until much later. Maybe it's not 'ignorance,' but a regional difference you're dealing with.
Don't be too hard on us Yankees. We're teachable. ;)
