Fallen trees and downed power lines litter downtown Houma .. Houma CourierHOUMA - A half hour before Terrebonne Sheriff Jerry Larpenter allowed deputies back on parish streets, 911 Director Mark Boudreaux helped me secure a seat on the fire chief’s four-wheel-drive truck.
Boudreaux had an ulterior motive, for he wanted Bubba to transport him to the Communications District building on Capitol Boulevard so he could check damage. Luckily for emergency dispatchers, the building was OK. Oddly, the sound of croaking frogs was loader than the whistling wind.
But all along Hwy. 311, broken trees, fallen branches, tattered signs and disconnected power and cable lines littered Houma’s main thoroughfares. Perhaps the most damage in the city was downtown, where split hardwood and oak trees and shredded metal from tin roofs could be found on nearly every block. [end snip]

Most of Terrebonne Parish without power
Thirty-five thousand homes and businesses were without power this morning, authorities said. It's not clear when crews would be dispatched to restore electricity.
Three-thousand people remain sheltered at 10 parish shelters, including the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center, the East Park Recreation Center and several area schools. Those people won't be allowed to leave until authorities lift a curfew that went into effect at 8 p.m. Sunday.
