Unfortunately, it probably will.
Storm surge to the east of the storm does not peak until several hours after the eye passes, as the onshore winds keep piling up more and more water.
On the coast, the rising water is accompanied by pounding waves.
But it's really surreal in the bays and other protected waters. For hours after the peak of the storm's fury, the water just quietly rises - but there are almost no waves. Many a bay front homeowner around here has watched in awe and dread as the water crept up their yards and into their homes.
I wish I had a dollar for everyone I've heard say:
"I thought it was over, but then the water just started rising..."
I watched it myself during Dennis. It was quite an experience.
