"All morning I've been hearing about breached levees and that P lake spilling over. And yet I keep reading that NO dodged the bullet."
It depends on what you mean by "dodged the bullet." Even though there is some major flooding, some collapsed buildings, etc, the damage seems to be falling short of the doomsday predictions - 50,000 dead, city swamped with toxic wastes - that the city would be virtually destroyed. But it remains to be seen what the extent of the damage is; the reports so far are fragmentary and laced with rumor. Chances are that the emphasis on NO has distracted attention from worse damage elsewhere.

Thanks for the roof info. Did the 10ft pillar that fell support anything? I mean main support. Don't think so. Wasn't that an external clock pylon--wouldn't think that would be load-bearing.

Re: "Here's your reply to the lefties regarding the SPR: the Federal government doesn't pay cash for the oil that goes into the SPR. The oil is delivered to the SPR by Chevron Corp. as payment for some large oil leases. So when oil prices go up, there is no budgetary impact on the Feds because no cash is paid for the oil. This is one case where the Feds actually made a smart move that saves the taxpayers money."
Never heard this before... Mind if I ask for a source?
I just hope it is true...

I'll ask again...How big is the flooded zone/ anyone??Anyone??"
It's changing by the minute. all you can do is try to keep track of individual reports as they stream in and try to build the big picture on your own.
How big?
Downtown New Orleans east to past Mobile Bay.

"what I'm trying to find out is how much of the city."I think they still don't know. The radio reporter said they were unable to travel the streets. Information will be slow coming I'm afraid.

I thought they deliberately dynamited the levee south of New Orleans during Betsy to save Uptown. That's what I heard, at least. Was that just a rumor?

Best thread tip ever,,I never knew that about the soap. It's also useful in a spray bottle with a little water to thin it against airborne nasties that get into the house. Whenever a Hornet or a Yellowjacket gets in, I hit them with the dishsoap spray. They instantly fall out of the air and can be stomped with impunity. Soap on the wings prevents them from flying, and soap on the body interferes with their breathing.

As we do the post-mortem on the media coverage, I think it's fair to say now that the 3 24/7 cable news nets contributed more to the confusion than they helped.

Sorry is that offends anyone."
Well, ordinarily I find mustard greens offensive, but as long as I don't have to eat them, I suppose thats all right?;o)

I was there five years ago. A lot of those aricraft are in an enclosed hagar-like building. great looking aircraft. The Drum has been move ashore since then. It's near that building. I hope everything made it through the storm.

The armor and hull is made of some of the thickest, most homogenous steel ever produced by man. A hurricane isn't going to do anything to it if the hatches are closed. In fact, even a tsunami probably wouldn't do much to the hull.
On top of that and unlike a building, it *floats*. "What storm surge?"

Simply amazing. What is amazing are the people on this thread saying this thing was "over hyped"! I wonder what they are thinking.

I forget what storm they were talking about on a news show yesterday, but they said that during a flood people had to grab onto trees for their lives. They had to quickly let go and jump back into the water due to these balls of fire ants who already found a temporary dry home in the trees. After hearing that, from now on I'll enjoy poisoning them.
