Around my house, with "freedom", financial responsibility passed on too:')
Thats why they stayed behind.
I am listening to WWL's backup studio, via KHOU. They reported a gust of wind in downtown NO at 90 mph.

So it's every man, women and child for themselves?
Why have a mayor at all?
Sums up the danger nicely. (Like your tagline)
The eyewall is either visible or just about to become visible on NO's 88D.

10 passenger trains of 10 coaches each. The main train station in New Orleans is LITERALLY right next door to the Superdome. Only problem: finding 100 passenger cars.
In Chicago, the moring trains move 300,000+ every morning (couple of hours) and every evening.
AP reports 90 mph gust at 12:45 in Downtown New Orleans
Tell that to my Democratic governor, Democratic lieutenant governor, Democratic AG, Democratic SOS (now that McKeithen's dead), Democratic Treasurer, Democratic agriculture commissioner, Democratic insurance commisioner (quick, before he goes to prison), and Democratic legislature. The Republicans don't hold a single statewide office.

WOW--he's god the goods!
The teacher from hell. If you don't "get it" by the time I am done, you are gonna go to hell ;-)
Actually, it's worse. I am an engineer, and a lawyer.
Kind of had the same reaction. Was there several years ago with a group of band students for a competition and the kids were upset that we wouldn't let them wander around at will. Then they saw some of the folks wandering around and decided it was much better to be with chaperones then on their own.
Outed as a thread-glory-seeking hog.
Little chair? I thought it was kindling. "Ooooops."
Standing is good for you.
takes weeks to position things like that...and you have to know where the hurricane will hit

"What do you think Charleston did to deserve Hugo?"
Well - that DANCE for one thing!
In any adult population, you have propably 5% who are as helpless as children in any emergency. That may be WAY low.
Oh my gosh!!!!!!!!!! Engineers are a breed of their own, but throw in lawyer to boot!!!!!!!!
The general public was not unaware of the hurricane in the gulf. In fact, the information available to the general public was just as accurate and timely as the information the government had.
Why not let the people take in the information available and make their own decisions. Self responsibility is a conservative position.
