If there is loss of life it will be because people ignored orders to evacuate. I noticed on the Weather Channel that the Interstates in that area have had their inbound lanes reversed so all lanes are now running outbound. There's no excuse for staying in areas that will receive the full force of Katrina. Hundreds of people died in 1969 when Camille struck because they decided to stay where they were rather than evacuate not due to US involvement in Vietnam.

I just have to shake my head at those who choose to stay and "ride it out". I have heard that because of the high rate of poverty in New Orleans, thousands of people cannot evacuate. When I heard that I wondered if it wasn't possible for the government, Federal or State, to find a way to transport these people out of the area.

What I find most disturbing are those that CHOOSE to say behind as they put others in danger. If I was in charge, I'd tell all of those who chose to stay, that they are on their own. There will be NO rescue attempts made.

The Superdome was opened this morning to provide a safe harbor for those who are unable to leave the city (started with the old and infirm, then to whoever else had need). It can house 70,000 and is high enough that flooding should not be an issue. My brother said it took over three hours to go 100 miles while leaving the city earlier today.

I find it unfathomable that the DUmmies could possibly attempt to blame Bush for any of this? Last time i checked, there was only one God in the universe and Bush wasn't him. As far as the National Guard goes, I don't know about them, but the Coast Guard is a strong presence in New Orleans, and I know the coasties are working hard to protect and help those who are in need.

The best way in my opinion would be to use the city bus system to transport people to higher ground.

I have a feeling that we will not see a Mayor Rudy rise up to the situation.
