I'm late getting on the thread, but been watching the TV a bit, and just eyeballing it, I am wondering if the Models may be off slightly, they already have shifted the track to the west some. There is NO WAY that this will miss NO, and it is even less likely that it will hit Houston.
The movement west they are talking about is only miles worth. The only thing that will save NO now is divine intervention.

1) Is there ANY chance of this maelstrom veering off? Pressure bands etc (I have to admit that I am not that well versed in hurricanes .....all i've had to worry about are blizzards and twisters for the last 5 yrs, so info would be appreciated).
2) Also how come they do no have military C-130s airlifting those people who cannot get out? The ride would be quite uncomfortable, but that seems better than sitting out a Cat-5. If I was a governor I would definitely have explored that option.
3) Finally how in goodness name will the state of Louisiana, and the country at large, handle the potentially huge loss of life (not to mention the fiscal cost of what might be the eradication of an entire city, at least in terms of viability)?
Although I guess my biggest question is if there is any chance of a miracle occuring that causes the hurricane to veer off (and not into Texas). Thanks NautiNurse.

One of our Baton Rouge Freepers just reported electricity went out for 20 minutes already--they are going to try to evacuate now.
Prayers appreciated for their safety.

Latest vortex recon has central pressure at 903MB, so she is basically holdig steady state. The wind reading came from the northwestern quadrant at 130kt ... so they are staying with the 160 KT reading of 3 hrs ago since they did not get a reading in the NE quad this time.
Basically what this says is the storm in maintaining its strength at around 165-175 mph winds. Possibly higher. New Orleans is looking at the doomsday scenario unfortunately.
This storm could have epic repercussions for our country. NO may be uninhabitable after this and the storm could concievably change the path of the Mississippi, with the effect of access to the Port of NO being cut off.

Thanks for your comments. I'm getting a sick feeling in my stomach for these people trying to get in the Superdome. The officials need to open more doors or something. This is getting ridiculous on how long it's taking.
I posted this on the end of the other thread. Maybe someone will be interested in commenting here:

Re: the Superdome:
Because of the cuvature of the exterior, any lateral energy winds will be transferred verticaly literally taking the roof off. You heard it here first. They are being evacuated into a death trap IMHO.
That's what I was thinking. Who has that photo of it? Any engineer types who are reading this care to opine?

I was in Portland when Mt. St. Helens erupted in 1981. The interviews I am hearing with people who are staying in their homes or riding it out somehow all remind me of Harry Truman who refused to leave Spirit Lake. It is so eerie.
