Plywood does little good if the structure is going to be under thirty feet of water.

I'm sooooo glad to not have heard the name "Natalee" all day today! I was ready to switch off FOX constantly. Poor Greta . . . what will she talk about??

That said, God bless and protect all in the path of this storm.

He's a smart guy and 30 miles inland is nothing in a storm like this. He'll be sure to be without power for a while but some folks on the ATRW threads have his phone number so if the phones are still working, we can contact him and not worry for too long.

What time is the storm expected in your area? Those painters had better get their quick tomorrow a.m. and get those ladders and scaffolding stuff down.

Hey now-I was trying to be nice. Seriously, I don't want anything to happen to him.

Speaking of oil-what if Hugo Chavez decides to try and take advantage of this by cutting off or reducing shipments?

I can see that your husband has some valid points, but at the moment I'm not too worried about roof failure of the Super Dome.

I have a Professional Engineering License (PE) in mechanical and structural engineering. Wind loads and structural uplift are fairly well known and designed for.

The wing lift phenomena he speaks of is when you have winds of different velocities on the top and bottom of the structure. As the Super Dome is enclosed this should not be a problem. As an aside, one of the most difficult uplifts I've had to design for in my career is for those service station canopies at gas stations.

Of course all engineering is fraught with cost compromises, but structural design and safety factors are fairly well stipulated in established building codes, so there are in reality not many corners that can be cut.

Yes, the strategic oil reserves are stored in salt caverns along the coast. There are two in LA and two others in TX.

Plus... Long Beach is inundated with ships coming in from China... last Christmas season they said ships coming in for WalMart were lined up across the Pacific just to wait their turn to get into port and offload.

When lives are at stack, how can you not issue a mandatory evacuation?

Nuts to defend any other position.

That's a hello lot different than watching them unpack their underwear and change their babies diapers, now isn't it!

Nothing like sticking a microphone in their faces as they lay out their sleeping bags on the ground.

Sheesh!
