I could have sworn that the Weather Channel (earlier this morning) reported the eye as being upwards of 50 miles in diameter.

TWC just said that the eye is 38 miles in diameter.
The eye appears to be due south of the mouth of the Mississippi. Even if Katrina made an immediate turn north, New Orleans is going to get the left side of the eyewall.

The eye wall is 20 miles thick.....the eye is over 50 miles wide......That's a total of a 90 mile diameter
It has achieved super cyclone status....Weather service models can no longer measure this one....The NWS is just watching and learning at this point.....
