Amid divide, Bush moves toward 'split-the-baby' immigration plan
PHOENIX The immigration issue is creating a quandary for the Bush White House.Bush and his advisers are caught in the middle. On the one side are supporters who believe the economy needs those workers who have come into the country illegally. On the other are conservatives whose priority is to clamp down on illegal immigration. Bush is moving toward allowing illegal immigrants who came to the U-S before February 2004 to qualify for guest-worker visas. People smuggled in after then would be deported. The White House hopes to have a detailed proposal to Congress in late September or early October.
(Where is there any wisdom at all in this crisis?)

Just curious- how are we supposed to know when illegal aliens snuck across the border? Is there some secret stamp on them that reveals their passage date?
Congress must take the lead, it is they that are running in 06. Don't wait for the WH, take the lead and seal the border.
Turn up the heat.
Still not hot enough.
I despise the illegal immigration situation we have now, but I wouldn't be too quick to conclude that Bush's plan, or something like it, isn't the best option of the POLITICALLY FEASIBLE plans out there.
The fact is, the "deport them all and build a wall" that I and most of the other Freepers support has absolutely no chance of becoming reality. American business demands a guest worker program of some sort and it's going to get it.
That being the case, I far, far prefer a program that gives these guest workers NO HOPE of eventual citizenship over one like McCain's. And part of me does think that Kyl-Cornyn's plan to deport illegals to Mexico just so they can sign up to return via a guest worker program is silly.
Since we're going to have a guest worker program, I personally would not want to have even MORE Mexicans come here to fill that program. I'd rather the ones already here do it- my goal is as few Mexicans as possible here. But we're going to have to accept millions of them here because no politically viable plan out there would get rid of them. Heck, Gov. Huckabee of Arkansas almost had a heart attack when we deported 100 chicken pluckers. Does anyone think we're really going to deport 11 million illegal aliens.
I wish we would, but it just won't happen.
Exactly. That implies the government already knows who these people are but isn't doing anything about it. That can't be the case. /sarcasm
If you are in this country illegally you need to be sent home. If you are seen coming across the desert you need to be stopped and sent home. If you dont stop you get shot .
If you wish to work in this country you must apply for work and you must report each month to an INS office where you are. How come we can make parolees check in and not guest workers.
What about the illegals who don't work, Mr. Bush? What about those who are criminals and welfare leeches and don't hold jobs? Do they get guest-worker visas too, Mr. Bush?
What a joke. Everybody, worker or not, will get them and he knows it.
The ones who came prior to 2004 still take education dollars away from our children, take medical dollars away from everyone, and evade the system at every turn.
Republicans, DO NOT reward the behavior of these criminals, or you will lose the next election.
On the one hand are supporters who believe the economy needs the cheap(read slave) labor.
I believe we SHOULD allow migrants to come in and do jobs these businesses need done. Just as soon as our employment reaches 100% and stays there at least one year, and if there are still employers that can't find people to fill jobs...then we allow a few in. No families. And you are staying temporarily. If you are here past your work visa's expiration date, still working...the employer gets fined completely out of existence and does 1 year per illegal, mandatory.
Its about time the border states start to organize volunteer state border patrols.. i guess something like the minute men.. i believe legislation in texas has been introduced for something like this... listen up washington and the GOP, the people are asking for your help.. if you dont want to do it, we will (minutemen x 1,000)

I'm about ready to "split my vote" and none of its going Republican.

Does this include all of the ones in jail, as well?
2. Deport ALL illegal aliens: take names and pictures on their way out, put those working here on a fast-track to get visas to come back.
3. Distribute guest worker visas: $1,000 per person/visa, valid for 3 years, must leave when expires and then renew ($1,000 again), babies born in the US while here on a visa NOT allowed citizenship, immediate deportation and forfeiture of money/property if you break the law while here on a visa.
4. Fine all US companies that had been hiring, or continue to hire, ILLEGAL workers: $10,000/worker for first offense, $50,000/worker for second offense, $100,000/worker for third offense.
Well, that's easy. We'll simply ask them, and they'll answer truthfully.
Although, now that I think about it, that might cause a problem because we're not allowed to ask them.
I guess all twenty million of them will just step forward on their own and answer honestly. Yeah, I'm sure they will.
