It's good to see the cops hassling pedestrians that are not suspects in any wrongdoing and providing other useful public services. Can I hire this guy to come over and kick my dog, too?

All she had to do was co-operate and none of this would have happened. Instead, she refused to co-operate and reading between the lines it sounds like she got a little intense.

Sorry, but manners count for something, especially with cops.

I don't think we're hearing the whole story. Although probably not a terrorist, possibly there was some profiling going on and if there was some sort of suspicion, I'd rather the cop err on the side of caution.

The Salt Lake area has some pretty hard core law enforcement officers. Years ago my dad was stopped because he was driving a Lincoln that had tinted windows. His other "crime" was that he was from California. They thought he was running drugs.

They backed way off when he verbally started recalling court cases about harassment and illegal vehicle searches. He was a former cop and worked in the legal field for decades. By the time he was done with THEM the were practically tucking him back into his car and telling him to have a nice day.

I hope she owns the P.D. before this is through. This is utter b.s.; no American citizen need EVER be subjected to these freakin' Dirty Harry Wannabes in such a manner. Too many cops assume that the Constitution doesn't exist. I love it when they find out otherwise.

You are an idiot. The cops --that protect you-- can't do their job if they can't identify the people they are talking to.
Get a life and quit bashing the folks that keep your sorry a--h--- free!!!!

Well if she was taking pictures of an FBI building across the street (or some other government building) then the officer would have some cause.

Otherwise...

And as far as requiring a social security number, I'd guess that is simply illegal to require.

Too pat! This smells. There has to be more to it than in this report. Something is not Kosher here besides her name. What a moniker!

Since the police are not saying what happened, we're only hearing one side, the side of the people who want money.

I'll wait till the full story comes out.

Don't worry. There's an Amen Corner here on Free Republic that says that once Americans walk out of their house, they hace NO rights.

However, the officer still insisted that she had to tell him the information; his supervisor, Sgt. Brian Stahle, who arrived at their location, backed him up.

If this lady (or her lawyer) knows anything about the law, she's gonna OWN these guys.

SSN Remediation Project

Federal Privacy Act of 1974:
A government agency must provide a disclosure notice each time the agency requests an individual's social security number. The notice must state (1) whether the disclosure is mandatory or voluntary, (2) by what authority the SSN is required, and (3) what use will be made of the SSN. (Section 7 of Pub. L. 93-579 in Historical Note, 5 U.S.C. § 552a)

Social Security Act:
Anyone who discloses, uses or compels disclosure of an SSN in violation of the laws of the United States is guilty of a felony punishable by a fine or imprisonment up to five years or both. (42 U.S.C. § 408(a)(8))

Don't know how many times I've told government agents to take a hike because THEY don't think they have to follow legal procedures.

It's GREAT feeling to strangle these maroons with their own bureaucracy. :)

But her refusal to provide her date of birth or Social Security number to a South Salt Lake police officer changed that.

Sometimes when it comes to the most simple things perhaps it's best to just play the game and return the ball to the other side of the court.

Under threat of arrest, Ortega de Chamberlin finally complied, but was cited for allegedly interfering with or obstructing an officer by giving false information and by refusing to give information.

Ah, the plot thickens via the thickener provided by Ortega.

After reading this entire thread (again),both Dudley Hiibel and Tanya Ortega de Chamberlin are apparently guilty of the most heinous crime in modern-day America.

Contempt of cop.

On Free Republic, no less.

We're done.
