WASHINGTON, Aug. 25 - A long-awaited C.I.A. inspector general's report on the agency's performance before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks includes detailed criticism of more than a dozen former and current agency officials, aiming its sharpest language at George J. Tenet, the former director, according to a former intelligence officer who was briefed on the findings and another government official who has seen the report.

To this day I have never been able to figure out why Bush kept Tenet in place as long as he did.

The Congressional inquiry did not have time to do "the kind of painstaking work necessary to assess individual responsibility," she said.

They sure tried, but for some reason it just didn't seem to be sticking to Bush so they dropped it.

because 41 was the DCI under Ford and has strong thoughts that the DCI shouldn't be political. Besides that, Clinton didn't even know who Tenet was. Bush was giving his subordinate the benefit of the doubt, as all good leaders do when lacking hard evidence to the contrary. Eventually, it was a systematic change that had to take place and that's when Tenet left. You can't just automatically fire someone and then expect loyalty from the next guy - and they had para-military dudes in Afghanistan or Iraq dying almost as soon as the dust settled. Bush respects the CIA, as he and all Presidents should, and he was doing his part as a boss. That's my take.

I could never figure out what Dubya saw in Tenet either. Besides screwing up Iraq intel, I hold Tenet responsible for dropping that turd Wilson in the pool.

It's a far stretch to think that Bush wasn't aware of the major failures of the CIA under Tenet, while us nobodies out here in cyberland figured it out a long time ago.

***You can't just automatically fire someone and then expect loyalty from the next guy**

The Clintons did it regularly and they got that loyalty too.Even after they were fired they refused to talk. Of course fear of death might have had something to do with that.

I also thought it was because he had Rummy at DEFENSE, and Tenet could keep the liberals occupied.

Tenet came up through the liberal ranks on Capitol Hill, a yes man of theirs, but he was not where the "REAL" intel was being gathered.

These liberals knew that, Hillry got herself on the Armed Forces Committee, where the REAL Secret INTEL was being harvested.

This a leak to the NY Times.

Which first means it came from a democrat (a leak after all) and secondly it is the NY Times.

ie. disregard whatever this report says.

You are giving credit where I do not think there is any.

Remember all the itching about how secret President Bush was by the liberals in Congress. Things were going on they had no "intel" about and we certainly cannot look to the Tenet led gathers as having "secret" intell.

After all they were "selecting" people like Joe Wilson to go gather intell on "yellowcake". Not a credible place to rely upon.

To keep him (Tenet) from making future statements critical of the Administration.
