For the first time in their probe of alleged corruption in Chicago city government, federal investigators today questioned Mayor Richard Daley.
Daley disclosed the interview at a City Hall news conference but would not say what he was asked. He refused to answer whether the meeting specifically concerned the city's scandal-plagued Hired Truck Program.
"What I can say is I answered their questions fully and openly," Daley said. "I cannot comment on the substance of their questions."
Representatives of the U.S. attorney's office in Chicago spoke with the mayor for two hours, city officials said. City Corporation Counsel Mara Georges and the mayor's personal attorney, John Villa, attended the meeting. Daley said he did not believe he was a target of a federal investigation.
The Hired Truck probe, pursued aggressively under U.S. Atty. Patrick Fitzgerald, has resulted in the criminal convictions of 23 individuals to date. Eight others have been charged and are awaiting trial.
The investigation began as a probe into alleged bribery by trucking companies vying for Hired Truck work and lately has expanded into an inquiry into city hiring policies.

Is it too early to start Daley Perp Walk Watch 2005?
What a great American family.
"I answered their questions fully and openly"
Fat chance. I have never heard a politician answer any questions "fully and openly".
Watching him be frog marched out of City Hall would be the ultimate schadenfreude.
I'M SHOCKED......SHOCKED I SAY!
RIIIIGHT!!!And the Cubs will sweep the Series, the Chicago Mob will dig up Jimmy Hoffa, and Elvis is working as machine operator at Mars Candy...
No, Men in Black had it right: "Elvis didn't die, he just went home."
an inquiry into city hiring policies.
I thought all that was "grandfathered" in.
I love the windy city, was born in Arlington,
you got to love folks who will vote democrats in
time after time to clean up corrupt city administrations.
(All democrat ones.)
Daley indicted? And a snowcone is on the menu in hell.
He should have been arrested when he vandalized Meigs Field.
Chicago does have one (out of 50) Republican alderman. It would be great to see 10 or 20. Just a dream though...
