A day after a special meeting between Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Muslim leaders, Muslims who do not respect secularism and law were told Wednesday, August 24, to leave the country.
"If those are not your values, if you want a country which has Shari`ah law or a theocratic state, then Australia is not for you," Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, said on national television.
He was quoted by Agence France-Presse (AFP) as saying that there are no two laws governing people in Australia.
"I'd be saying to clerics who are teaching that there are two laws governing people in Australia, one the Australian law and another the Islamic law, that that is false," he stressed.
"If you can't agree with parliamentary law, independent courts, democracy, and would prefer Shari`ah law and have the opportunity to go to another country which practices it, perhaps, then, that's a better option," Costello, a conservative Catholic, added.
Costello has been Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party since 1994, and Treasurer in the Australian government since 1996.
Education Minister Brendan Nelson further told reporters that Muslims who did not want to accept local values should "clear off".
"Basically, people who don't want to be Australians, and they don't want to live by Australian values and understand them, well then they can basically clear off," he said.

I wouldn't say I hate them. Peter Costello expresses my feelings perfectly in the article - Secular western society may not be for certain people. If it isn't, the time has come to leave and go somewhere where the system better represents their aspirations. Do not come here and try to change ours. We like it (more or less) the way it is.
Ah! herein lies the rib! 'We' is what the Muslims want to change in secular, non-Muslim societies. Ever wonder why Muslim birth rates are astronomically high compared to other communities, even compared to birthrates of poverty-stricen non-Muslim societies? A part of the answer lies in sermons given in mosques aimed at increasing Muslim numbers significant enough to cause demographic change in the host society. When the Muslims attain their 'desired' population proportion of a majority over others, the 'we' vote for a Muslim law, constitution, et al. Why else do you think practically every Muslim society shuns secularism without much effort? Secularism-intolerant countries started with the Muslim "world".
Good point. Tolerance of other beliefs is not something muslims do well. In fact, their religion tells them to shun others who are different at best (or kill them at worst). I think of the French example of banning head scarves in public schools. The day is coming soon when "French" voters will vote to REQUIRE head scarves.
Tyranny of the majority, and our lefties will lead us all right down this path to a "democratic" religious dictatorship.
