A new rotor was being brought in Wednesday afternoon to be used as a spare part for a U.S. Border Patrol helicopter brought down by a rock thrown by an illegal immigrant Tuesday, said the patrol's Yuma sector spokesman.

"Not at all. There's a difference between attacking American citizens on their own property, and defending one's self against illegal aliens who are attempting to kill you."
In the situation that entailed here, by the time the Cobra would have been legitimately weapons free, it would have already crashed from the thrown rock. Therefore, the Cobra would need to be "weapons free" against any group of "suspected illegal immigrants" they found. The basic principle you uphold here is really no different than what the BATF proudly upheld at Waco--that law enforcement agencies are there to be judge, jury, and executioner against whatever class of criminal is unpopular with the Executive Branch.
Imagine President Hillary Clinton making use of your butched-up Border Patrol against "suspected illegal immigrant smugglers" who just happen to also be "right-wing terrorist extremists." Remember, the military got called in to help incinerate Waco because of an alleged (and nonexistent) drug lab.

Sometimes their thinking processes are such convoluted loops, trying to piece it together long enough to type a funny response is impossible.

Do not whitewash this issue like the press did in Middle East labeling the terrorists "insurgents". No law breakers here, but an invasion by a force deemed hostile to our interests.
Rules of engagement should apply not statutes.

In this situation, perhaps. Then again, perhaps not. Neither of us was there at the time. But does this single data point mean that there's no merit to arming the patrols?

I never advocated using deadly force without provocation.

That's quite a stretch from armed border-partol agents to preemtive attacks on "right-wing terrorist extremists" who are American citizens.
We're at war, and one of the many threats that we face is the possibility of terrorists coming across our borders from other Canada or Mexico. Do we kill anyone who tries to cross illegally? 'Course not. But border-patrol agents have to be able to protect themselves as they're protecting us. How would you propose we give them that ability without allowing them to use force when necessary?

Any president could just as easily use any existing Federal law enforcement agency -- or the National Guard -- for that purpose. My suggestion re: border-control patrols would have no effect on the possibility or likelihood of that happening.

It's happened before.

...And if it makes you feel any better, I'd be all in favor of disbanding the DEA and BATF, and redirecting the newly-available resources to the borders (and restricting their responsibilities to that task alone).

Um, no. Not until they start taking on tanks with rocks.

I recall a H34 *Kingbee* helicopter being nailed by a giant crossbow [more technically correct, a ballista]during the Vietnam war period, using a telephone-pole sized projectile. We had a lot of amused speculation about the size of the rubber bands involved, but I bet the crew found it not a bit funny.

Uh yes, but minor damage to a helicopter blade does not a crisis make.
Except to those who have travis mcgee dreams.

Well, OK then. If you don't think it's a big deal that someone tried to murder our BP, I can't do anything about that.
Carry on.

When "illegal aliens" are fair game for application of lethal force without anything resembling due process...you will discover that the Left considers you a special subset of "illegal alien."
