Before quoting Saint Thomas Aquinas in support of Petulant Pat, I'd review the history of what happened to the Chech Jewish population AFTER they succeeded in assassinating Ostengrupenfurher Heydritch. Hitler and his henchmen planned to kill the Czech Jews anyway, and indeed all the Jews of Europe. The assassination of Heydrich may have sped up the process, and that was a sad event. As for assassination, the world would have been far better off, and many thousands of Jews spared the gas chambers, had the German generals succeeded in assassinating Hitler and toppling the Nazi regime in 1944. Reportedly, Pope Pius XII was aware of supported the coup attempt, as did the Protestant theologian and martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

If you are arguing that not every contemplated assassination is judicious, no one will dispute that trivial point.

A timely assassination can save many lives, however.
