Two Norfolk-based guided missile destroyers collided off the coast of Jacksonville, on Monday afternoon while conducting exercises, The Virginian-Pilot reported.
No one was injured and damage was minor, Cmdr. Conrad Chun, a Navy spokesman in Norfolk, told The Virginian-Pilot.
The collision happened at about 1:30 p.m.
The USS McFaul and the USS Winston S. Churchill are Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers. The McFaul is commanded by Cmdr. Sean M. Connors and was commissioned in 1998. The Winston S. Churchill is commanded by Cmdr. Todd W. Leavitt and entered Navy service in 2001, the Virginian-Pilot reported. The incident is under investigation.

This is nothing...I'll try to find some hard copy..but a few years after WW II...the USS Missouri was run aground off the Va coast..it sat there for two days..until they could get tugs down to haul it off..

How did they get close enough to collide, in the open sea? I know that replenishment brings close, but...
Maybe they were former Angels!

Our XO slammed the stern of our destroyer into a pier, doing $250,000 damage (to the boat). His rank was commander, and that is as high as he ever went.

How did they get close enough to collide, in the open sea? Doing leapfrogs, maybe? (close-in, high speed maneuvering drills).

Then there was the infamous "Knox On The Rocks" incident...
That was when the young feller on the bridge at night thought he heard a tsunami and turned the ship into what he figured would be a giant wave (at sea those are only about a foot high, max) - turned out the sound he heard was the waves on a reef. And shortly thereafter the ship was, too.
