NORFOLK, Va., Aug. 23, 2005 A Dare to Repair Lowes home repair and car care clinic for Hampton Roads military spouses looking to become proficient while their spouses are deployed was held Aug. 20 on board Naval Station Norfolk. The show, hosted by Julie Sussman and Stephanie Glakas-Tenet, both authors of the Do-It Yourself Home and Car Repair books, was filmed by Good Morning America and will air Aug. 30.
The event was part of the Department of Defenses America Supports You campaign, a nationwide effort to recognize American citizens support for men and women of the U.S. armed services, both home and abroad. To make this event happen, Lowes hardware stores sponsored the Dare to Repair project, contributing tools and hands-on classes for military spouses.
This was a great opportunity for spouses to learn how to be independent when it comes to home repairs or car care issues they may encounter while our military service members are deployed, said Cheryl Drake, ombudsman for Naval Station Norfolk. This brought many military spouses out of their homes and provided them with the opportunity to not only learn new things but to also bond with other spouses.
Sussman and Glakas-Tenet went over several demonstrations on how to fix vehicles and making interior home repairs.
Tracy Hickman, a military spouse, said she was very happy she attended the clinic because it will help her and her four children save some money inside her home while her spouse is deployed. I learned a different technique about how to fix a broken washing machine, Hickman said. This is definitely going to come in handy because I just purchased a new washing machine and now I dont have to worry about calling a repair person to fix it if it breaks down on me. I can just save some money and fix it myself.
Sussman and Glakas-Tenet said they believe that by providing military spouses with knowledge of preventive maintenance and home repairs, they will now have a better understanding of how to repair these items inexpensively and proficiently.
When we first wrote Dare to Repair, it was critical for us to ensure that spouses understood exactly what preventive maintenance was and how it could be addressed in the most efficient manner, said Tenet. Women are great about sharing information and the fact that we were able to share this information to people who would actually use it and feel more confident while their spouse was deployed, gave us great satisfaction.
Sussman and Glakas-Tenet said this was a mission-driven project that needed to be exercised.
After the taping, Sussman and Glakas-Tenet gave out autographed Dare to Repair: A Do-It Herself Guide to Fixing (Almost) Anything in the Home and a Dare to Repair Your Car: A Do-It Herself Guide to Maintenance, Safety and Minor Fix-Its and Talking Shop books. They also gave out BP Gas company cards in addition to Lowes appliances that were used for demonstrations during the taping.
FYI Pals for the DIY Gals left behind.
look what just popped up.
LOL I hate repairing stuff!~ Trouble is, stuff always seems to go wrong when deaconjim is at work. After working outside so hard today, and having a water pipe burst, I was not going to wait till he got home to be able to take a shower.....much better to get the blue gunk pipe glue, get the parts, make sure they were clean, put together using the glue and wait for it to "set". Reward= nice hot shower! : )
BTTT!!!!!!
