Robert Alan Shields, 30, was executed by lethal injection just after 6 p.m. Tuesday for the 1994 slaying of a woman who lived next door to his parents.
Paula Stiner, 27, was stabbed and beaten to death in her home in the Houston suburb of Friendswood.
Police said she was robbed and her car was stolen.
Shields attorneys were seeking a stay of execution Tuesday, contending that the inmate was trying to defend himself from Stiner, who was stabbed and cut more than two-dozen times.
The U.S. Supreme Court refused late Tuesday afternoon to block the execution.

They need to use the death penalty MUCH more often. Rapists, murders, child abusers? Off em quickly.

I don't know why the courts didn't believe him. I generally rob people, stab them a couple dozen times, and then take their car in self-defense.

I suppose it would be too brutal to use stabbing and beating as an official method of execution, wouldn't it?

"...was trying to defend himself from Stiner, who was stabbed and cut more than two-dozen times."Uh-huh. Nice. The only person who could dispute that is dead.
God bless Texas, indeed!

Last one to be hung here in NH was in 1938. Pretty hard to believe that there hasn't been at least one in that time that deserved execution.

Maybe if he'd have used the "I was just trying to give her an abortion" defense

Personally, I think they should go back to the old way:
An oak tree and a noose.
Perhaps a guillotine, get the hear the thunk as the head falls into the basket.
But the "Magic Needle" works too.

12 in 8 months? That's only 1.5 executions per month.

Just depends on when the district courts set the executions. Some years there are 25-35 while other years only have 15-20.
