I've said it before here and I'll say it again: We will have no one but ourselves to blame if we fail to treat these words as serious. As your example makes clear, evil rarely just pops out of nowhere. Hitler was very clear in his intentions for a long time. Likewise, Lenin wasn't pretending to be a clergyman when he took over Russia.

Bin Laden had been warning for years that he wanted to strike America, and many treated his diatribes as just more Islamo-lunatic blather from another crazy towel head.

Some crazy towel head he turned out to be. Now, the terrorists are getting pushed back by America's actions now, and they increasingly appear in dissaray, but what happens when (if) they get a nuke or other WMD? Personally, I think they eventually will, and we'll have little if any time to stop the catastrophe.

When a man stands across the street screaming that he's going to burn down your house, do you just ignore him as nuts and go back inside? Do you call the cops then or wait until he's screaming on your front lawn. What about when he's standing on your porch with a can of gasoline? After the flames start? At that point calling him on when he was still across the street doesn't seem like so much of an overreaction, does it?

Sorry for the shameless self-bump, everyone, but I really think this needs to be brought into focus.
