I went with Allen because of all the people in the current field, he seems like the most viable conservative. Tancredo is a one-trick pony, and Newt's negatives just can't be overcome, unless Maxine Waters is the RAT nominee. Slapping Chuck Hagel around on Sunday also sent Allen's stock way up in my book.
As for the others, they're all deluding themselves if they think they can win the nomination. McCain and Hagel have already alienated the base, Rudy's too liberal, and Frist is just too milquetoast to fire up primary voters. Pataki will mount his 3Q campaign: The Quadrennial Quixotic Quest to be the Veep, and will once again fall flat on his face. As for Mitt Romney, I've heard good things about him, but I think being governor of Taxachusetts will kill him with GOP voters.
So that leaves Allen. Now, if Dick Cheney decides to run, all bets are off. ;^)
The event is mostly based on Michigan Politics(as opposed to CPAC which is national). There will be a couple of presidential candidates there(Romney's a Michigan native). Keith Butler is our other big "federal" race, as congressional districts have been stable since redistricting.
The Grand Hotel is sold out, so meal tickets are purchased at the conference, and those aren't cheap, and from what I've heard is first come, first serve.
If you're going, sign up ASAP if you can find a hotel room since if they aren't sold out, they will be quick. The official site is HERE. Everything on the Island is probably sold out(It was close to sold out when I signed up). If it isn't sold out, it's probably now going for $200+ a night. You may still find a hotel near Mackinaw City(South of Bridge) or St Ignace(North of Bridge) on the mainland, which is much cheaper than the Island(although there are ferry costs). The last ferry leaves from the Island for Mackinaw City at 12AM, and it's probably earlier for the St Ignace.
I'm glad to see that. I've had it up to here with the spending in DC by all branches of the federal government. I'll be doing my part to send one of them (Stabenow) home in 2006.
