Congressman says nation should fence off Mexican border - "Top it with razor wire."

DES MOINES United States Congressman Steve King says the U.S. should build a wall betweeen itself and Mexico, topped with razor wire.King spoke to a group at the downtown Marriot on Monday about toughening immigration laws and the strict enforcement of laws already on the books.

King says building a two thousand-mile-long fence would cost about 680 (m) million dollars, and it would slow border crossings. King says he wants candidates running for president to have clear and aggressive plans for dealing with immigration.

But for those of you who have given up, you are part of the problem. At least move on to some other issue and let those of us who will fight on this issue deal with it.

No.

I will continue to interject on this issue and insert a note of hopeless resignation, enuii, and broken spirit with the intent of making people give up.

Let me guess---he did a mind meld with KoKo, and came away far more intelligent???

Amen. I've said all along that the best way to stop immigration is to shut off the welfare faucet.

I would like to see a mixture of both of these.

I, too, think it is a both/and not an either/or proposition.

Compared to what we are spending elsewhere on frivality, $8 Billion or even $80 Billion seems like chump change.

I have a real question as to the long-term efficacy of such a project (the fence) - especially if Uncle Sam plays general contractor instead of financier. But Israel sure has seemed to stem the tide of suicide bombers dramatically.

But regardless of the long range efficacy of such a thing, it will all be moot after the next terror attack if it is traced to a border crossing. With the fence project the politicians will at least have the cover that they were doing "something" substantial and concrete. They may, in fact, be doing substantial things right now but I am not aware of it and I think the general public is unaware as well.

The republicans are misreading their base on this issue. They should be out front on it. If a fence is a bad idea, then propose something real and better that will convince the public you are not dragging your feet and taking only half-measures.

Razor wire will not work because the fences that have it now are just cut through at ground level.

The fence has to have sensors to detect such breaches.

I bet the fence can be made for less.

That's right. We need to make America suck more! Or is that make Mexico suck less? Ugh. Now I'm confused!

Yeah, only 80% of the registered voters in this country. No one at all. The political power is there. It just has to be used. The American people are just now waking up to this issue, and there's been a lot of political movement already- look at the REAL ID act that got passed.

The American public is fed up with illegal immigration. Illegal immigration and border security may be the number one issue in the upcoming elections in '06 and '08. Smart politicians are going to get out front on this issue.

FENCE TO CONTAIN VIOLENCE: The first phase of Israel's security-barrier project to prevent Palestinian militants from crossing into Israeli territory was completed on schedule in July. Work continues in the northern West Bank and near Bethlehem.

The Israel Security Fence
Israel ’s security fence is a temporary and nonviolent way to save the lives of innocent civilians targeted by Palestinian terrorists.

Wasn't NAFTA supposed to help keep illegals in Mexico by making their homeland more attractive? Or was that the excuse for sending Social Security checks across the border? Maybe the new CAFTA will solve the drug problem too...?

***$3.3B to build it. Patrol it? Maintain it? How many more billions per year will it cost to truly seal off the border?***

No offense but - so what?
Do you have point, 'cept nope, can't (won't) be done'.

  1. How much to Patrol it? A: Less than it now cots us to have ICE acting like a Chinese Fire Drill 24/7/365.
  2. Maintain it? A: A lot less than it NOW cots in all the aid illegals suck out each year - in MEDICAL costs alone, not to mention "free schooling" for their brood, TAXES not paid - both Fed & state (what's April 15th to an Illegal - another day to get drunk) and money sent OUT of our country each week, hurting the economy.
  3. How many more billions per year will it cost to truly seal off the border? A: See #1 & #2. And I'd wager a lot less each year than it NOW costs to house the criminal element of the "immigrant community" - which btw, is growing each year exponentially.

Then we have 'other cots' to the USA - like illegals getting in auto accidents, which WE wind up paying for, Illegals getting 97 gazillion traffic citations, which they skip out on, or get a $25 'pretend' fine because the judge knows 'Juan' will freaking disappear.

Or the growing and disturbing trend of DRUNKEN (hard working /s) illegals killing people on the highways at 2:00 a.m. Hell in any area where illegals have a major footprint, driving after 11:00 pm is like playing Russian Roulette.

Oh and one more 'cost'; Housing-Property Values. When Illegals move in an area that area looses BIG. Because they are uneducated and un-skilled they immediately depress any area they move into. My old neighborhood in Chi was "Middle Class", it is now 90% 'Hispanic' and is 'poverty level'. Any whites who've remained have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in property value.

I heard Congressman King on KFAB radio in Omaha. I wish he was Nebraska's Senator instead of Hagel.

Interesting point: We are killing lots and lots of terrorists but he wouldn't disclose the classified numbers. Good man.

How does not giving ILLEGALS free medical care and free access to public schools "make America suck more"?

LOL, actually I thought of that one too.

The ironic thing is the principle behind the Great Wall is similar to our situation - they were being invaded by Mongols, we're being invaded by ... mongr ah... Mexicans.

Someone posted on the FR a few months back one of the best ideas.

Build a canal, similar to the Panama Canal, so wide is to make it difficult to traverse unnoticed. We could stick it to the Chinese at the same time by creating an even shorter route from the Atlantic to Pacific.

Hard to tunnel under something this deep. Stock it with Piranha just for fun. Even the liberals would like it because we could charge a toll for the evil big corporate ships passing through.

How many languages would that sign be printed in? I bet it would take a minimum of 2 4-year election terms to reach a non-partisan agreement on just that question.
