Monday, Aug. 22, 2005 11:59 a.m. EDT Mexican Presidential Race Kicks Off ... in Los Angeles
The leading contenders for the presidency of Mexico plan to launch their 2006 campaigns this fall in Los Angeles.
Last month Mexicans living in other countries were given the right to vote by mail, beginning with next years presidential election, and the candidates are seeking to woo support from Mexican immigrants in the U.S.

But they will have to begin their campaigning in the U.S. early because Mexican laws bar campaign appearances outside the country after candidates are selected this fall. There are an estimated 10 million adult Mexicans living in the U.S., and about a third are eligible to vote in the Mexican election, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The leading contender for president is Andres Manual Lopez Obrador, the former mayor of Mexico City. His campaign lieutenant first spoke of a visit to Southern California in July during the inaugural of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
If Obrador visits on September 15, Mexicos Independence Day, "well have at least 100,000 people lining the streets to see him, said Felipe Aguirre, former California chairman of Obradors Democratic Revolution Party (PRD).
Roberto Madrazo and Arturo Montiel, who are seeking the nomination of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), both plan to visit Los Angeles this fall.
The PRI held the presidency in Mexico for 71 years before losing in 2000 to Vicente Fox of the National Action Party (PAN). Mexico allows only one 6-year term, so Fox must step down next year.
He is supporting Santiago Creel, his former interior minister. Creel hasnt said if hell come to California, but PANs president Manuel Espino will visit Los Angeles this month, the Times reports.
Long-time immigrant Jose Angel Gonzalez of Norwalk, Calif., supports the PRI. He said most of his friends in the U.S. back some form of amnesty for Mexicans living illegally in this country, and he would like Madrazo to discuss the issue with President Bush.
"People who are here arent going back, and employers need cheap labor, said Gonzalez.
"Lets have temporary work permits for three months, six months, a year. If theyre good citizens, then give them a chance to apply for a green card. That would take away the money in smuggling people across the border, and fewer people would die in the desert.
Aguirre of the PRD said front-runner Obrador has "never been a champion of immigrant rights, but he may come around now because of the campaign. If he wins over the migrants, that popularity could pull a lot of votes in Mexico.
Lets start a loud rumour that they ("illegals") all need to go home for this vote...then seal the border. It would be a hoot.
The point is, how long are we going to put up with this "migration" and the posturing by those who wish to break into our country and live off of us? We are far too worried about what others will say about us. Why do we not begin demanding that our politicians do their jobs? We must shut down the border and begin shipping back the illegal "migrants" before we are completely bankrupt.
LOL! I didn't think it was possible, but the media has come up with yet another thing to call aliens..."LONG-time immigrant. Yes, I realize he might have a green card....why should that be "long time"?
I also wondered if the localities will insist on a bond for these big campaign outtings like they wanted from the Minutemen.
They're just early laying claim to Aztlan's future capital city.

I have a better idea. Why doesn't Bush just declare Mexico the 51st state ... what the heck, we're already paying their social security.
Sprint will give you a cell phone for your Mexican voter ID as identification. Don't ask me how I know that.
Ok, so if these people are allowed to be here by both the US and Mexican governments and Mexico allows dual citizenship so that mexcian-americans are able to vote in both US and Mexican presidential elections then why is not the native US citizens of Los Angeles civil rights being violated , for not having the same rights for equal representation?
Consider that the Mexican governments are allowed to hold elections here only for Mexicans with illegal or legal residency , hand out legal documents that only these people are able to use for US government services, e.g. the counselor cards, then why is not the native US citizens of Los Angeles civil rights being violated for not being to vote in these elections or have representation in the governmental authority that reins over their territory which realistically is both the Mexican government an the US government now,,, so where are the law suits?
How wonderful, foreign politicians coming on our soil to campaign for president and get the votes from their illegal citizens. Maybe we should do the same. Oh I forgot, Mexico actually enforces their immigration laws so there's no need.
Don't count on it Jose, it's just a matter of getting the right politicians into office.
Somehow I doubt Mexico would allow it, they take their sovereignty very seriously.
Over my dead body (and the bodies of millions of other Californians). We won't give up without a fight.
WHAT A DEAL, SET UP POLLING BOOTHS IN AN AUTOTORIAM AND INS BUSSES AT THE BACK DOOR. SHIP THE BAS---DS HOME AS SOON AS THE VOTE IN THE MEXICAN ELECTION.
WHAT A DEAL, SET UP POLLING BOOTHS IN AN AUDITORIAM AND INS.BUSSES AT THE BACK DOOR. SHIP THE BAS---DS HOME AS SOON AS THE VOTE IN THE MEXICAN ELECTION.
They sure ain't rocket scientists. Imagine a full fledged political campaign by foreigners for foreigners in an American city.
Homeland Security will of course not be seen or heard from.
