Illegal immigration is a complex national problem.
It wont be solved by piecemeal attacks such as that of GOP gubernatorial hopeful Jerry Kilgore in opposing a day laborer site in Herndon.
Such tactics fuel anti-immigrant prejudices while skipping the hard part, acknowledging the broad tradeoffs and difficult compromises necessary for a permanent solution.
If exploitation of nativist emotion isnt Kilgores intention, then he should pull the plug on this line of campaigning.

At issue is the proposal of a coalition of community organizations to open a day laborer site in a soon-to-be abandoned police station straddling the Herndon-Loudoun County line. Currently, scores of men gather daily at a nearby convenience store to await the arrival of private employers who hire them for day labor in construction, yard work, and the like.
Kilgore joined critics calling the proposed site a haven for illegal immigrants and a breeding ground for illegal activity.
But others argue convincingly that an official site, including a police or security presence, would more likely contain bad behavior while serving both small-time employers and legal workers. The Herndon council validated that view with a 5-2 vote Wednesday to open the center.
No doubt, some illegals will turn up there. But frustration with U.S. failure to stem the flow of illegal immigration ought to be directed toward Congress, the immigration service or others with an opportunity to make a real difference.
Virginians who grouse about illegal immigrants should open their eyes and see whos really tending their lawns, putting new shingles on their roofs, cleaning toilets in their office building and hotels. Illegal immigrants are doing the dirty jobs that Virginians dont want.
Kilgore characterized the problem in Herndon as one of illegals taking hard-earned dollars from law-abiding citizens.
In fact, the issue there and elsewhere wouldnt exist except for Americas addiction to cheap labor. Undocumented workers sustain many of the services and prices Americans have come to expect.
Politicians as diverse as President George Bush, GOP Sen. John McCain and Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy acknowledge that a much-expanded temporary worker program, combined with some form of enforceable amnesty for illegals with long tenure here, is the only hope for getting a handle on the problem.
Name-calling about undocumented workers who supposedly leach the system dry might win votes. But it wont make the problem go away.
Let the sniveling liberals who want to give our country away play their stupid race card all they want. It's not working anymore.
"I saw Antis hiding under my bed!
Why won't anybody believe me?"
I get the impression that not everything is love and bliss in the Buchanan/Tancredo camp. Looks like Tancredo is trying to crawfish on Buchanan and Buchanan is threatening to find a new candidate to run for president in 2008.
When they entered into their partnership Tancredo was looking at giving up his Congressional seat anyway because he had promised a voluntary term limit.
Now that he has crawfished on that promise he can safely sit in Congress the rest of his life being treated like royalty as long as he doesn't alienate too many people in power. Except for that pesky agreement to run for president.
That would mean giving up his Congressional seat. Most ex-Congressmen become pathetic figures within a few years when they realize that their friends weren't really friends and that their jokes aren't really funny and that women aren't really sexually attracted to thim...
I'm stocking up on popcorn and sitting back watching this play out. My guess is that he's already done his mea culpas to Rove, DeLay and Melhman.
This policy is sheer idiocy..
Yup, and all that capital going back to Mexico is SOOOO good for the American economy...just how does it help the local American economy, all that $$$ sent south?
Oh yes those evil builders, who take the financial risk to build things, even with the obstacles govt.puts in front of them such as excessive regulations and taxes.
Time to tar and feather them.
The more you post, the more shrill you get, just like hillary.
And open borders will!!!
cry me a river!
It works for bayuroud
You really should ask Itzlzha's permission before posting his picture.
did you happen to see posts #33 and #54? you'll find them very relevant to the "race card"
No one is being rewarded. In fact, just the opposite, most proposals contain a fine or penalty far greater than under present law.
Hunh? Wasn't me. I challenged bayourod on that figure too. He just seems to pull most of his facts and figures out of his culo.
Sorry, I meant that post for bayousierra.
We do not "bash" immigrants. We simply expect them to OBEY the laws of our country and STOP entering our country ILLEGALLY.
In our conservative circles around here, we call RINOs like bayourod "brie nibbling, chardonnay sipping liberals".
Seems to fit this particular quisling.
And they would be enforced at the same level as sanctions under the current law, right, bayourod? In other words, NOT AT ALL. Americans aren't going to buy a pig-in-a-poke like the 1986 amnesty again.
Throw illegals out.
Put scofflaw employers out of business and in jail.
Build the wall on the Mexican border, from the Ocean to the Gulf.
The other evening you said we were all anti-everything. You mean there might be a few exceptions?
Far greater but still so trivial as to amount to a mere slap on the wrist for lawbreaking.
Why don't you tell the whole story about these miniscule fines instead of, as usual, trying to mislead the unwary with your half-assed drivel.
How much are you being paid in your position as Chief Pimp for the OBL/cheap labor lobby?
Did I mention that you are a total disgrace to this country?
