Illegal immigration is a complex national problem.
It wont be solved by piecemeal attacks such as that of GOP gubernatorial hopeful Jerry Kilgore in opposing a day laborer site in Herndon.
Such tactics fuel anti-immigrant prejudices while skipping the hard part, acknowledging the broad tradeoffs and difficult compromises necessary for a permanent solution.
If exploitation of nativist emotion isnt Kilgores intention, then he should pull the plug on this line of campaigning.

At issue is the proposal of a coalition of community organizations to open a day laborer site in a soon-to-be abandoned police station straddling the Herndon-Loudoun County line. Currently, scores of men gather daily at a nearby convenience store to await the arrival of private employers who hire them for day labor in construction, yard work, and the like.
Kilgore joined critics calling the proposed site a haven for illegal immigrants and a breeding ground for illegal activity.
But others argue convincingly that an official site, including a police or security presence, would more likely contain bad behavior while serving both small-time employers and legal workers. The Herndon council validated that view with a 5-2 vote Wednesday to open the center.
No doubt, some illegals will turn up there. But frustration with U.S. failure to stem the flow of illegal immigration ought to be directed toward Congress, the immigration service or others with an opportunity to make a real difference.
Virginians who grouse about illegal immigrants should open their eyes and see whos really tending their lawns, putting new shingles on their roofs, cleaning toilets in their office building and hotels. Illegal immigrants are doing the dirty jobs that Virginians dont want.
Kilgore characterized the problem in Herndon as one of illegals taking hard-earned dollars from law-abiding citizens.
In fact, the issue there and elsewhere wouldnt exist except for Americas addiction to cheap labor. Undocumented workers sustain many of the services and prices Americans have come to expect.
Politicians as diverse as President George Bush, GOP Sen. John McCain and Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy acknowledge that a much-expanded temporary worker program, combined with some form of enforceable amnesty for illegals with long tenure here, is the only hope for getting a handle on the problem.
Name-calling about undocumented workers who supposedly leach the system dry might win votes. But it wont make the problem go away.
No, just serfs and slaves, as you LOVE that illegal "cheap labor" so your $0.39 lettuce is nice and cool, and those houses that sell for $250K were built with labor margins so low, that the builders don't hire AMERICANS anymore!
Yup, and all that capital going back to Mexico is SOOOO good for the American economy...just how does it help the local American economy, all that $$$ sent south?
You mean an amnesty? Isn't that what this debate is about, whether or not to simply forget that illegals have broken the law by extending them amnesty? Yet you insinuate that people here oppose illegal immigration simply because they don't like immigrants, isn't that the innuendo you're reaching for? Your cheap rhetorical trick is yet another characteristic attempt at diversion, as insulting as it is irrelevant.
I would be opposed to changing the law to give illegal aliens legal status. I don't believe in rewarding people for violating our laws.
Approximately 50% of all undocumented aliens entered legally and simply failed to return after their temporary visa or authorization expired. That is not a crime. Does that mean that you have no objection to 50% of the out of status immigrants?
If someone committed a crime of speeding, running a red light, discriminating in renting a house, owning a gun without a permit, or possessing marijuana at some point in the past would you forever hold it against them?
Sorry, I don't buy the line that people oppose illegal laborers simply because they are illegal.
But you would still oppose them. That means you must have some other reasons for opposing them.
Only in your race-baiting mind. The majority of Americans don't believe in rewarding foreigners for violating our immigration laws.
I already have "anti-Christian" and "anti-Catholic" on my list of things that some Antis are anti, but thinks for reminding everyone again.
What a lie. Even if I bought your bogus 50% figure, being "out of status" makes you a "deportable alien," i.e., an "illegal alien." You don't just excuse lawbreaking, you lie about it, too.

The truth is not "anti" anything when it's the truth. You're just pissed because I don't like the Virginia Pilot's lying piece of crap.
Liar.
that our economy is dependent upon them,
Liar.
that we have aborted 45 million American babies, that unemployment is dangerously low at 5%, and that our immigration laws are in dire need of reform.
Yes. How that ties in with your prior statement is anyone's guess. Are you bipolar?
Why do you resent people who come here to do jobs you don't want to take? Someone has to do those jobs.
There is no such thing as "jobs no one wants to take." If you understood Capitalism in the tiniest bit, there are only "jobs no one wants to take at the prices being offered. If we didn't have the illegals, wages would rise to were they should be and teens would be doing these low=wage obs while they and everyone else works up the rung.
There is only one solution. Round up all illegals, send them home, close the border and make everyone from everywhere follow the same rules for legal immigration.
You and your ilk will be responsible for the destruction of the USA. You encourage lawlessness and support the drain on our economy. I hope you choke on it when an illegal rapes your daughter (or, preferably, you) since so may of them are criminals -- their first criminal act being breaching our borders or depresses wages so low that they are a permanent underclass and your personal taxes go up so high you can never get ahead. I hope you lose your your neighborhood to 20-people-at-a-time in a 2-bedroom house with 5 to 10 cars, 3 of which work at any given moment. I wish upon you your house to be worth 1/5th of what you paid for it.
I hope your local hospitals and trauma centers shut down and you have a massive heart attack. And that the ambulance drivers and attendants can't understand your English.
In other words, I wish upon you what you wish upon the USA, you traitor. Since I know you don't have to live with any of these things I have described which are the very real costs of illegal immigration you white wine liberal.
That's because you're a despicable race-baiter, and the only thing that people like you have to fall back on when your pro-illegal immigration arguments get torn to shreds is to insinuate that people who oppose illegal immigration are racists. You ought to be ashamed of yourself.
Viva bayourod!
"Approximately 50% of all undocumented aliens entered legally and simply failed to return after their temporary visa or authorization expired. That is not a crime. Does that mean that you have no objection to 50% of the out of status immigrants?"
That's the same as the only 50% of the illegals get caught number you use. Where do you get them from? What part of the word illegal don't you understand?
"I already have "anti-Christian" and "anti-Catholic" on my list of things that some Antis are anti, but thinks for reminding everyone again."
Speaking of anti, maybe you should tell people that you're anti-hispanic, anti-nigerian and pro european:
To: tertiary01
"Since you have so much compassion for Illegal Mexican immigrants "
Not me. As I've posted before, I have no affinity for Mexicans or Americans of Hispanic descent.
If I had my personal preference, instead of Mexican laborers, we would have Western European laborers with blond hair and blue eyes pouring across our borders bringing their beautiful daughters. But that isn't reality. Neither is "sealing the border".
To recognize that Republicans must not unnecessarily alienate Hispanic voters with gratuitous insults if we hope to keep Hillary out of the White House is not the same as saying that I want to invite them to live in my house.
However all my relations with Hispanics have been good. Can't say that about Nigerians and half a dozen other types.

YEAH, BABY!!!
"Can't say that about Nigerians and half a dozen other types."
How about the Chinese? They caught 8 of them on HWY 59 headed towards Houston last week.
Ah, there we are.
Let the sniveling liberals who want to give our country away play their stupid race card all they want. It's not working anymore.
