Iraq draft says laws must conform to Islam -text

BAGHDAD, Aug 22 (Reuters) - A draft constitution for Iraq to be presented to parliament on Monday will make Islam "a main source" for legislation and ban laws that contradict religious teachings, members of the parliamentary drafting panel said.

Good point. Iraq is an overwhelming success, and way ahead of schedule. Some people around here have drank the MSM koolaid.

>>Are these allowed in Afghanistan

Don't know, but Iraq was a far more developed, technocratic modern state than Afghanistan ever was.

I'd be interested to see what the women assemblymen have to say about this.

As of now, secularism seems dead in the south and the center.

If we wanted a Sharia state, we didn't have to invade and overthrow Saddam, the Iranians would've done it for us.

"Women's rights do not conflict with Islam."

You're joking right? When my wife deployed to Saudi she wasn't allowed to drive and when she went downtown she had to wear the black Halloween costume. And you say Islam doesn't conflict with women's rights.

Trouble is, unless we locked up or killed every fifth person, this was going to happen.

Yep... those numbers were in the WH's original estimates.

Baby steps! Our first shot at democracy was so "great" we threw it out! LOL. I myself was amazed never having given it much thought from a time line POV, that George Washington our First President did not take office until April 30, 1789. I Congratulate the Iraqi people for getting this far, we have to hang in there with them.

Do you really think this is good news?

I know that I am being hyperbolic about this...but I was watching Jed Babbin on Fox a few minutes ago...and I have heard him sub as a talk show host for Bill Bennett...

he is a very, very smart man and a straight shooter...and I didn't see where HE was being very optomistic about this...

I am curious though, he and Shep were saying it would be Islamic Law or split up into 3 different "countries"...why would THAT be worse than Islamic fundamentalist law for all, even the women that risked losing their lives by voting last year?

Oh, grow up. We clearly state in our founding documents that our rights and laws are derived from God. As a predominantly Muslim country what else did you expect? The proof will be in the interpretation of Islam and the practices adopted. If universal suffrage and an independent judiciary are adopted you can stop worrying.

For a group that roundly poo-poo's the mainstream media, I am baffled that suddenly a large group of people here are buying it hook, line and sinker...

If I didn't know any better I would think this was some kind of "lets play the role of the DUers" for one thread.

Yes, that is true about our constitution taking a long time...but, WE didn't have terrorists telling us HOW to vote, or they would blow up half a block!

After watching that show on Nat. Geographic about pre-9/11 last night, I think too many of us have been burying out heads in the sand about how dangerous these people are...

and you will have the actual leaders of that country, actively supporting some of them...

From ITM:

Update (11:55 pm local time):

"The Assembly has received the draft from the CDC but becaue there is a number of issues that still need further discussio and in accordance with clause 61-f of the TAL, voting will be postponed for another 3 days until the leaders of political blocks can reach accord on the few remaining disputed issues" said Hachim Al-Hasani chairman of the Assembly.

Apparently they think that it is in the best of the process to have accord among all the political blocks.

Session is over.

Okay---I will leave...I have only watched 5 minutes of TV about this...as I said above it was Babbin..

BUT, I have read a lot about Muslims, Islamic Law, and I really remember seeing them line those women up on the 50 yard line in Afghanistan and having them kneel down, and blowing their brains out...

BUT, I will leave, because I wouldn't want to rain on anyone's parade..go ahead and celebrate.

First Amendment of the new Iraqi constitution: The right of the people to smite the neck of infidels shall not be abridged.

The article doesn't say anything we didn't know long ago. They'd already planned on saying no law can be against Islam, but they would also lay out a basic set of human rights that no law (even those supported by Muslim fundies) could violate. We'll see how it panned out.

Unfortunately, there's no way to reconcile the two. Islam will perpetuate, among other things, violence and tyranny against women. And given that Jihad is burned into Islam, it seems that that will be the likely loophole in the Constitution for anything which doesn't satisfy fundies...

Okay lets imagine Iraq does turn into an islamic theocracy (and this is highly unlikely given facts on the ground). Whose fault would it really be?

Well it's clear that Islamic Iran is responsible for helping the terrorists in Iraq and forcing Iraq to become an islamic theocracy.

In other words, if Iran was secular this wouldn't be a problem. Any blame for an Iraqi theocracy lies squarely at the feet of Jimmy Carter for allowing an Islamic Iran to emerge. Also if Clinton had actually pursued Bin Laden this wouldn't have been a problem in the first place.

Just think the liberals should know this before they try to spin the situation (seems they have started).

I didn't call you out specifically txsleuth and I apologize if that's what you think I was doing. I think stating that this agreement is akin to the beginning of the execution of women again in stadiums is a reach and unfair to those who are there trying to work out their own constitution at the risk of their own lives.

OK I do respect Jed Babbin. I do think that just getting the draft in is a major accomplishment. This is just another step in the process I think that this is just meeting the formula. We have amended our Constitution 26 times. We also have to realize these people are not Christians or Jews, our country was founded on Judeo-Christian values, these people are not the same as us. I think that this is just the first step. Maybe if the media would stop pressuring them into artificial time tables things would be less tense. At least they now have something in writing to start fighting about. I have faith that this will ultimately work out and I hope being a woman, most especially that women are protected and given the rights that they too have risked their lives for. Being a faithful follower of the Senate you know that nothing is ever final.

They were always going to adopt a democracy peculiar to their beliefs. We knew that before we freed them, but were hoping they'd come to their senses.
