IIRC, "Gonzo" is a word that was invented by Thompson himself, to refer to the type of "journalism" he wrote, which used an exaggerated, bizzare, and highly subjective style (see "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"). The Sesame Street character came later. :-)
